Spent a great deal of time in the CA backcountry. Almost never see trash or litter.
I asked because after you come down the hill from the Ebbetts pass sign, a little while on the road, there is a pull out on the left that has an overlook. We pulled over, and someone apparently spray painted a couple of rocks set in the ground.

It took me the third trip going back to Angles Camp over the pass to finally see the resting place of what was left of the Chalmer family (if that is indeed the proper marker).

Biggest question is exactly how much snow do they get up on that pass (when the close the road down) and does anyone snowshoe in the area?

And I can see why it's one of your favorite drives!

I've also got to ask, do you know the story on how the flag got on top of the biggest "hill" in the background at this lake? It's almost impossible to see in the pic, but on the right hand side (off center a little) a pole with a flag sits on top. Didn't even think to bring my binocs for this trip.

One subject that comes up again and again is splitting CA into 2 or 3 smaller states so the common interests are more aligned…

Just prior to WWII is the closest it came to reality… Northern CA and Southern Oregon proposed to create the State of Jefferson claiming to avoid edits from both state governments…

I believe Pearl Harbor happened…

Later talk was a 3-way split…

Funny you should write that.

We hit the same mexican food joint on the way to Angles Camp on the way back to Fresno because we liked it so much the first time (El Torio in Valley Springs I belive). Somewhere along that road after we left the restuarant I believe, there was this big green sign about bringing in "The State of Jefferson" (or somthing along those lines as I could only catch so much driving), and I was wondering about that sign and it's meaning.

If I were to move to California, Caleveras county ironically would be first on my list for an area (already looked, too expensive for us LOL).

The irony is I saw a couple on the flight out of Sacramento to Dallas, and they were on the same flight to Charlotte. I had to ask the guy (we were next to each other getting on the plane) if he was visiting California like us, and he seemed very pleased to tell me that they were actually moving to NC and he was a "Califonian native".

I can assure you, having lived in upstate NY, there are more than a couple of people who dream of breaking away from Albany;)

The boys at the MWTC were busy this weekend. We had Blackhawks and Chinooks flying over our campsite at night. This picture (sorry about the bad focus) was taken from the top of Mt Patterson looking west towards Sonora pass. You can see the MWTC at the bottom.

When we drove by, it seemed more active than usual as well IMO, more than one bird on the strip.

A personal question if you don't mind, how long does it take you to get to Mt Patterson?

The trailhead is about 6 miles past the MWTC, just south of the 108 off 395. It's about another 90 minutes of jeep trail to get to the top. Mt Patterson is the big bald mountain you are looking at east of the marine base.

I was curious as to how long of a drive from your home to Mt Patterson?

One reason why West Virginia is my favorite state on the east coast is when I lived there, at most, it would take no more than 2 hours to hit some of the best whitewater on the east coast when in the past, it would be a minimum 3-5 hour drive depending on what state I lived in (reality is, some creeks I would drive 3-5 hours to if it were running was only 30 minutes away and I could hit them on a moments notice).

My shoulder can't take paddling anymore until I replace it, but I can still camp LOL

Ah, for us, from La Grange to where we camp near the MWTC is about 100 miles. It can take us 3-4 hours since we stop in Sonora for food and fuel. Then we flat tow the jeep behind the RV as far as Kennedy Meadows before we unhitch and drive both vehicles separately over the steep windy part of the pass. It can be quite a production.
