GB Herons are seen here year round when the water is not frozen over. Like this year.
Have had them up close, big wingspan and when flying close do seem like a dinosaur.
Fun to watch hunt, we got to see one by a small waterfall hunting and catch a fish.

I've heard of heron rookeries all my life but had never seen one until a couple years ago. Saw a heron and in a tree, then noticed it was on a nest. Then noticed more and more nests and herons. Probably a couple dozen total in that one tree. Pretty cool... except for the white coating of heron poop.

They hunt the fields here seasonally for small rodents. Squirrels, mice, gophers and such. They stand still staring down a hole for a long long time. Then suddenly stab their beak onto the hole and raise up their catch to swallow it down live.

I just spent a long weekend in Blackwater Falls, WV and Dolly Sods, WV taking photos. These are a few of my favorites that I captured.

Eagles sometimes go to the rookeries as an all you can eat smorgasbord.
