Thinking this might solve a seasonal problem
Looking to learn about PTO trash pumps. Need only 2" 150-200 gpm type.
I'm unclear on what's available and what's best. Any help appreciated.

just wondering why a pto pump? I noticed that they are quite expensive unless you are buying just the pump and building the frame and drive yourself. A gas powered pump seems to be cheaper and allows more flexibility in positioning and location.

I wanted to avoid the problems associated with occasional use of gas powered engines if possible. I may use this next month and again in 1 or 3 yrs from now. When I need it I need it to work right now not after I fix it.

If you want to build it yourself, you'll need a pump, a 2 pulleys, a belt, and you need to make a 3pt sled for it. While not complicated, it will take time and possibly trial and error to get it at it's optimal speed.

From what I can tell, you are looking at $2000 to $3000 if you want to buy one one pre-made.

200 Gallons per Minute, I assume you mean per hour

It's minutes. Bigger pumps do more.

I bought one of those dirt cheap disposable ( I think I only spent $180 pre-covid) honda clone 2" chinese water pump with a plastic pump body for refilling my 1,000L totes. It was too cheap to pass up on and PTO pumps cost $$$$. Hasn't died yet. I'd go PTO if I needed something like a 4" pump. I don't think a 2" PTO pump is worth the wear and tear on my tractor.

I see those clone pumps... and Ive seen some on CL too - some pretty cheap if you want to drive a distance to get them.
I have an electric 1/2 hp trash pump. I'll keep an eye open for a used PTO pump at this point.

What kind of wear and tear are you talking about??

IF a little 2" pump is wear and tear on your tractor, you should have picked a higher quality tractor in the first place.

Engine hours. Service intervals. Fluids and filters. Diesel.

Last time I checked none of these were free. I don't see sense in running a $100K tractor at $20/hr to drive a $500 PTO pump when a $180 disposable chinese pump will do.

I also don't mow my lawn three times a week.

There used to a lot of towable pumps around here before pivots came along. Check farm equipment auctions or farmers junk piles. My dad had one similar to this for irrigating from the pond, and priming it was an ordeal.

That looks about perfect. I'd like to find one myself.

Your tractor cost 100K??? I'm thinking the OP's didn't and neither did mine.

I have no problem running mine doing small jobs. It just doesn't cost me that much to do so and surely not 20 bucks an hour to run it.

I've left mine sitting charging the battery, didn't cost me 20 bucks an hour to do so!

I might have to make one up on a receiver hitch skid... yeah time to look for a bare 2-3" pto pump.

Higher Quality?? He has an M59... and medium size tractors just don't come any higher quality than that - though I might be a wee bit prejudiced. Or maybe just spoiled.

Pre-emisions industrial engine, 6 speed hydrostat, super heavy construction. Even the FEL specs are amazing.

We use ours for chores large and small both. It doesn't seem to age.

Many of the water pumps or trash pumps will have a hard time priming with any lift.
One way often used to prime irrigation pumps was with a gas engine vehicle as a vacuum source,
a hose from the intake manifold to a valve at the inlet of the pump with the discharge valve closed,
use the trucks engine vacuum to suck the water up and fill the pump body, close the vacuum line then start the pump and crack
the discharge valve open and the water was pumping.
Especially the 4-8 inch pump suction lines with the semi-trash pumps even with just a 1 to 6 foot of lift can be very difficult to prime.

Then why worry about putting a few hours on it?

I would never worry about putting some hours on a high-quality tractor, it's going to run so many years it's a non-issue!

I use a PTO pump to drain Duck holes
