It's a really good feeling to know you can make a major career change if you have to. Of course, it's better to do it out of want then to be forced into it, but it's very doable. Don't underestimate your own abilities to adapt and learn a new trade at a later age.
Very true, I've done the same myself. What I was referring to were less adaptable skills. For example, last century here in northern New England there were a lot of good paying jobs to be had in paper mills, or related industries. Those, for the most part are gone, and for someone who may have started there right out of high school running a machine in a mill was all they knew. Not always skills that translate well without a lot of re-training.
You and I seem to have followed a similar career path, one required skills that were a bit more portable.
Its real easy to hypothesize that, but when you really are a parent of children, its a MUCH more difficult balancing act than you have said.

One way to turn off a group of parents is to try to tell them what parenting is like when you have no children of your own.

It ain’t easy. In fact, it is one of my most difficult undertakings of my life.
Not arguing with you, I'm sure it is difficult. But some of these things need to be taught, and if parents don't do it who will?
Mine were quite strict, maybe overly so. Sure didn't put up with much BS from me or my siblings. Hated it at the time, but looking back I'm glad they did, well most of it anyway.

I was Blessed with perfect parents. Instilled a strong work ethic in me. I instilled it in my boys. We've all benefited.

My folks weren't perfect(pretty close, though ;)) , but they sure did the best they could for us. My siblings and I are all grateful. Now our kids are grown and expressed gratitude to us for their up bringing. Feels good to hear that from your kids.:)

His company owns Forest River. As far as I know, that's the only one.
They make not just RVs, though. They make boats, buses, trailers, etc...

While those are all different companies, they are all owned by Forest River, which is owned by BH.

Kinda like if he owned General Motors. He'd own ONE company with multiple brands.

Yea, I see that now. The list I posted is just their stock portfolio not including companies actually owned by Berkshire Hathaway.

Yep.

I slightly overstated. But as yours, mine were pretty close.

The longer I live the more I can understand why my parents did the things they did and why. That goes for work, life lessons, parenting, etc. Nice to be able to live to an age where things start making sense.

When I was 15 I could not believe how dumb my parents were about the ways of the world.

When I was 21 I could not believe how much they had learned in such a short time.

Yes, since the economy is global and the US is the biggest player, our economic mistakes affect the whole world...also, some other countries also pumped money into the void.
That was probably our tax money to start with.

Absolutely. My eldest Son is 50. It's amusing and rewarding seeing him have that realization. :)

Twitter is laying off about 3/4 of theirs.
Someone sent me a YT link the other day to a Twitter employee applying to their first "real" job after getting laid off. Hilarious. I'll have to try to find it.

ETA found it.

They lost me when baseball went on strike years ago.
So I switched to college.
Now I may switch to high school.
I coached it. Left when they started talking about paying college & yes even high school athletes.
