That is true about super duty trucks (why I own a 2007), but the post I was responding to was referring to cars.

The Deming management method is all about making a better product more efficiently. There's a book called "The Reckoning" written by David Habersham about how the Japanese car industry started with a basic car design and then steadily improved it year after year leading to American car makers loosing a huge amount of market share because the Japanese got steadily better following the Deming method.

I have this book and found it a very good read and the highest award in Japan manufacturing is the Deming award and people made pilgrimages to his modest home just to be in his presence… should be a movie in their somewhere…

I really appreciate the book recommendation guys. I have been wanting to find a book about this for quite some time. I will definitely add it to my audible library tonight.

yep… sticker 33,800 plus 10% tax, $1,000 license plus doc fees… call it around 38k

I think 24k out the door was a good deal with 7miles as equipped.

I remember factory ordering a 2wd Dodge D150 back in 11/84. Cost $10,000 and I about fell out of the chair.
My '20 Ram 3500 Laramie diesel was almost $80,000 out the door.

My first new truck was a stripped down base model 1978 F-100. I paid $6000. But my annual income then was less than $15,000.

And we’d like to put a stop to that. One way is to curb runaway 8% (really 10%) inflation.
Its stealing our dollar value faster than we can keep up with.

Well, I like my little B2620 I bought years back. Was cheap enough to pay cash, small enough to mow the finished lawns with, has built a mile of bush road and maintains my 21 acres.

But if I ever do need something heavier, I have the 55 Allis sitting here on display that can go to work any time.

And for 86 grand I can go to Mecum Auction and buy all kinds of big reliable old restored tractors before I ever spent that for a new emission motored machine.

Sure the new ones have all kinds of comfy fluff in the cab, but fluff doesn't do the work.

Then I bought my first tractor with a loader suspension. All I can say is WOW. Not having the seat base ram my spine into more back problems sure is nice on bumpy fields. Then came a cab suspension and a front axle suspension. Rides so much better that you don’t feel beat to death at end of the day.

Then I found out how useful power mirrors are. Then I realized how nice a heated seat is for the back on winter days.

What those suspension comforts and creature comforts do is keep you working longer when you are farming 40+ hours per week for 9 months per year. They seemed frivolous to me, too. Now I want them with every tractor. I still have 2 basic tractors with air ride seats and they are pretty rough to use for 8+ hours.

The best kept secret in the world is what a vehicle actually costs, and where the dealer makes a profit. I'm guessing that at $24K, the dealer still made a buck or two!!!

New? Not likely. New vehicles generally have 3-7% markup. That’s it. Pretty shocking. The automotive manufacturers themselves are making a much higher percentage selling vehicles to their dealerships (that’s the best kept secret).

You'd actually be surprised how little dealerships make on new cars. On a $30,000 car they're might make $2000-$2500. They make much more on trade ins/addons/upgrades/warranties/service and financing.

The model is proven to make money. Too many people take the short view and not the big picture. Look at printer sales. Many are sold at a loss because the money is in ink/toner. The company isn't crying because the printers are losing money, they are looking at the net profit. Car manufacturers and dealers are no different. Ditto with tractors.

Probably true here, but it is a tractor website, not just a small tractor, or low use tractor website.

I do see some smaller tractors now available with suspensions, and other comforts not found in years past. And they sell pretty well. I farm a duPont property and the owner is a descendant with a lot of coin. They just bought a loaded-up 60HP Kubota for estate chores. The groundskeepers love it.
