Speaking of derailments, a while back I posted pictures of four derailed cars in the NS Elkhart yard. Well, they are still laying in the same place, haven't been touched as far as I can tell. I think they've been there the better part of a year.
Wonder what's up with that?
Makes you wonder.

Could those cars aren't needed so why the rush to repair them. Maybe they put them up for contract repairs and the bids came back higher than they are worth. Having been in car Repair business, I can imagine many more reasons than I just listed and they still sit there.

They have a car repair facility right there in Elkhart several hundred feet from where they are laying on their sides. Two of the cars are open top hoppers that can't be that badly damaged. I wonder too, just who owns the cars? Maybe there's some big insurance fight going on that hasn't been settled yet.
The ARMN/UP reefer car that is setting upright doesn't look all that badly damaged either. I would think an expensive car like that would begotten back in service ASAP.

But who owns the car? Who's repair shop is near by? If it has a X in the cars name its then privetly owned. Even if the RR owns it, they still may have it out for bids or its not worth fixing.

That was really interesting. I remember the 70’s-a little…
It was a terrible time for railroads. It seemed like thats when American heavy industry collapsed in the rust belt combined with heavy recession, high interest rates and soaring fuel costs.

But hey, music and movies were great! lol

All bets are off if the looming rail strike occurs.

Just another thing to add to the list...

Let's see, rail strike, ups strike, record inflation, fuel and fertilizer prices, rising inflation, higher interest, crime, etc... and the latest bug going around...

Look on the bright side. Think of all the great train photos you can take when they're standing still!

My nephew works for bnsf but I've not heard from him concerning his work. I guess a rr strike is on topic...

If you think so. We'll see how it goes, but my guess is we'll want to revert to pics and stories shortly. Hate to see a fun and interesting thread moved to behind closed doors. Maybe start a discussion on that aspect of RRs in the front porch?

We've been having a major wild fire just East of Oakridge Oregon. Called the Cedar Creek Fire. I've been hearing many more trains then normal that run the Union Pacific line which goes right through the worst of the active fire zone. Even Amtak still seems to be running.
Thought this odd, till I learned about the fire trains, which not only protect the track, but are being used to maintain a fire line corridor.

A recent film made about the delivery of the Big boys. Kind of over dramatic but still a neat film.

I frequently ride a bike trail in Western PA. that shares the Brush tunnel with the Western Maryland Scenic railroad. Last week, I almost got caught in the tunnel with the oncoming train!

The engineer is supposed to sound his horn when approaching the tunnel but for some reason, he didn't on this occasion.

Right behind the train came a bunch of these pedal cars:

They were followed by this tender:

From all the laughter, everyone seemed to be having a great time!

The A/C in the F40 locomotive must not be working, judging by the open door on the front end.
