I read articles like that all the time. They start out making sense and then they don't complete the premise, because the premise was just to get you to click on it.
Though I like most stuff on NPR, they are very guilty of this. 3 /4th of way through, the narrator has veered off subject, to what they really wanted to talk about, that may or may not have anything to do with the original, as presented, subject. :)

We used to follow the DDT fogging truck on our bikes when it would drive through the neighborhood. I can remember someone breaking a thermometer in the streets and us kids playing with it.

Then in Florida I can remember the old DC-3s flying over head, usually early in the morning, spraying for various bugs. They planes were no using DDT at that point.
Same here. You could hear the truck coming and we'd all jump on our bikes
In the spring we'd set trot lines amongst the trees next to the Mississippi.
We had several neighborhood fish frys! We caught some monster catfish.

Probably comes from the fact you don’t own ”your property“. If you think you do, stop paying them rent (in the form of taxes) and see how long it takes for them to remove you from it.

They voted for the leaders that put this in place, they should be forced to live there vs being allowed to move someplace nice and ruin it too.

Not sure what your point is. Are you saying you feel entitled to destroy a resource because you own a piece of the surface? If you have water rights you have a deed to part of that resource. If you don't, you have no more rights than anyone else.

I read to mean if you don't pay taxes you will be evicted from your OWNED (no outstanding liens, etc) property. Now I think if I ever hit that scenario I would be entitled to destroy all improvements on that property before I vacate the piece of land.

The country is full of freeloaders who want the government to defend their property rights but don't want to pay for the privilege.

I pay for lots of privileges for others, even people who arguably do not deserve them. Would be nice if it actually went towards defense of my and others property rights though. That sounds like a great concept, wonder how we deviated so much?

In some places they don’t want a individual to use a gas powered weed eater, those same places sell the ability for large corporations to remain polluters. Live Carbon Prices Today

So I get to pay for these people to go after me, despite being a “drop in the bucket” and the ones they should be defending me from, get the pass?

Thanks but no thanks…

With just two months left in the CA rain season, it remains mired in drought. Why hasn’t Governor Newsom halted corporate water abuses?

I can tell you why, because he is not defending all of the ”freeloaders”, you pay to play. He will sick the .gov on the others, for you, as long as you can funnel the money.

Your property title records are paid for by your property taxes. If someone encroaches, do you want to have to hire your own judge and rent a courthouse? Pave your own roads? Hire your own law enforcement and fire fighters? People start griping about stuff that has nothing to do with property taxes. There's no money in reporting local government to a small audience, so people are becoming more and more ignorant of all the services local government provides. You are not renting your property from the government, you are paying them for the services that make it possible to use your property.

Where ever I have lived the lions share of property tax is education...

In California 26 special assessments on my city property as line items in addition to the statewide 1%.

Special assessments ranging from $7 for mosquitoes to hundreds of dollars for street lights... we have no street lights but it's for the city overall...

Second to schools and what takes up most of the budget without earmarks is city and county pensions...

My good friend is retired city manager from two cities and the number one projection to disaster is increasing pension liability...

The Boston tea party was about taxation without representation. We have representation. We may not like them, but we have them.

Actually more research into that has contributed to 'Critical Race Theory' - the history that can't be discussed in schools.

Tossing the tea was the specific event that thumbed the nose at the British. But the larger picture was that Britain was abolishing the importation of more slaves into the UK, was about to abolish importation into the West Indies etc, and the move to end British slavery everywhere was underway. (finally enacted in 1833). The American colonists refused to accept abolition so they had to secede from the British empire to preserve the slave-based portion of economic prosperity here.

No representation in Parliament made American's voices irrelevant regarding taxation ... and continued slavery.

you are paying them for the services

Well, that’s the solution then. Individuals are obviously not paying them enough. If they coughed up as much as the people they are supposed to be protecting us from, they might have our best interest in mind…

Somewhere aound 30 years or so ago, Washington sate propsed to do that. It got shot down before it even got off the ground.
My, how times have changed. Private companies now voluntarily report on their customers to the government.

Big brother? Hell, the whole family is watching you.

Services --- our schools are on 4 day week since the state change how local property taxes are distributed. Not sure how much longer they will operate the system. My county road has been graded once this year, many others not at all. Our sheriff deputies spend more time re-arresting people that did not show for court than new offenses. I know one that has been arrested 16 times this year alone for failure to appear. Each time he was released with a new court date. Even theft of firearms does not warrant police intervention, neither does cattle theft these days.
I pay my property taxes because it the right thing and will continue to do so but I maintain my part of the county road and ditches and handle my own security.

It is interesting what has priority and what doesn't when it comes to enforcement and allocation of tax dollars.

The city streets are on a 100 year paving schedule if they don't forget!

The elected officials made decisions years ago which are still trickling down with regard to public employee pensions.

One every decade most States require that the Stae and all political subdivisions do a compensation study, to determine what a fair salary for their workers is. Then they try to get to parity with other employers. A lot of the entities included the pension benefit in their calcs as a benefit. Which allowed them to pay lower wages.

Problem was, that just pushed the cost down the road for the next folks to deal with. Wasn’t a problem until the baby boomers started retiring, and they suddenly had to pay those wages they had deferred for thirty years.

Interesting viewpoint, but I see nothing at all about continued slavery.
