I used a 1" continuous strap wrapped three times around the pipe to choke it. The only time the strap slipped was when the pump got caught on something. We set it down an inch and it pulled past whatever was catching it. A loosely set pipe wrench held the pipe but you have to be careful to not turn the pipe when wrenching on it or it'll twist right out of the wrench holding it. If it falls out of this wrench its by-by pump.

This is the rig I came up with to pull the pump. A railroad tie clamped in the grapple. A looped chain is captured by a 4x6 bolted to the RR tie. A chain hoist hangs from the loop. With this setup I had more than enough height to pull the 20' lengths of pipe with only one reset. Took us about 3 hours to pull 200' of 1.25" pipe.
