Big Cars are killing Americans

I have taken to driving the speed limit and somehow miraculously have managed not to kill anyone
Good idea. Most people are driving OVER the posted limit anyway so that usually puts you in a vehicle free spot, what I do as well. Not into driving in a clump of vehicles travelling at warp factor 1, bumper to bumper anyway. Something about going over the limit with no space between them often spells WRECK. Assured clear distance is nice to practice.

Last time I glanced at the sign on the on ramp, it said 'Merge', not surrender. People come down a on ramp and stop dead at the end like waiting for someone to stop and let them in or the merge at a speed well below what traffic is moving at...duh.

On an interesting note, here in Maine it's not 'merge' it's 'yield,' and that makes for some fun with tourists.

Merge or yield are about the same thing and neither mean 'surrender' on the on ramp. Besides I like the on ramp because I can smash the fuel pedal and blow the carbon out of the engine and exhaust system. My issue is, I cannot smash it as long as I'd like to. My 'buggy' is very capable of exceeding 100 per on an average on ramp. It has a 150 mph speedo. Never explored that but I'm pretty sure I could bury it with no issue.

It’s a known fact that if one car goes the speed limit, all the cars behind them have to go just a tad slower, and it causes traffic pulsation.

Going with the flow of traffic causes less social problems and lessens the chances that someone will get antsy and make aggressive moves.

Yield means just that, as it infers those already on the highway have the right of way; if need be the driver on the ramp is expected to come to a complete stop, though that's obviously not what anyone wants.

OK then lets make it degenerate into GRAMMAR and syntax
DEVOLVE means to transfer authority to do a thing from one agency to another.

In the last several years one hears all manner of uneducated talking heads on TV using it as a substitute for DEGENERATE.
It is not.
In their ignorance, they imagine it is some shortened form of De-Evolve. Which, to my knowledge, is not actually a word.
That's just more destruction of the best language on earth
WORSE, the worthless turkeys who make the dictionaries (lexicographers) have stepped up their habit of dipping into the gutters to find the latest bastardizations of the language so they can incorporate them into their increasingly useless dictionaries.
Kinda ironic that the use of the word ‘devolve’ has gone down since the 1840s. 🙃

I was going to point the above out, but you beat me to it. ;)

One point to make though regarding on and off ramps; because of the way they approach the highway it can be difficult to see the oncoming lane. 48 years ago we were taught to look over your right shoulder, as mirrors aren't good enough. When I do that now, all that I see is the back of my seat. Looking over my left shoulder on most ramps gives me a nice view of the door post.

They also have started a campaign this summer to remind people that they are supposed to yield upon entering the interstate.

Yep. Merge means to match the speed of traffic, then slip into the stream. Yield means stop if necessary until it is clear.

You know, we might not need cameras, sensors, etc, if vehicles weren't designed to be rolling blind spots.

A lot of that is because the pillars that hold up the roof contain air bags and are also better roll-bars than cars of our youth.
