I bought a used 2016 BX25D last year that had 200 hrs on it. I have put on just over 100 hrs on it since I've owned it, for a total of slightly over 300 on the meter. It has the R4 Industrial Tires, all the way around. For no other reason than appearance, I was thinking of going to Turf Tires. My question is, Can I do it in steps? Can I do the fronts first, in Turf, and run them with the R4s on the back for awhile? I'm just thinking of trying to make it easier financially, instead of laying it all out in one sum. I haven't even priced them, so maybe it isn't a huge amount anyway? But if I have to do it in 2 purchases, is it safe to mix treads, front & back? Also, if anyone has info on the cost, I'd like to hear that, too.

Thanks,
Tom

Why not just buy the fronts or the rears, and hold on and wait until you can afford the other two tires?

Good point. Yes, I could do that. One of my front ones, though, the right, is a chronic leaker, and it's been to the shop a few times, and though they say it's cured, it goes soft over a month's time. But you're right. I could put up with it for awhile longer, and put the new ones all on at one time.

I would not mix tread pattern unless you never use 4x4. It could break things in the drive line, at min put a lot of stress on the front gear set. If you do go to Turf, I highly suggest Multitrack and I MUCH prefer 8 ply tires, a bit more money but last a lot longer and don't puncture on everything like 2 or 4 ply do. I'm cheap and broke but the bargain lawn tires don't last if you use the loader a lot. The 8 ply will let you run 30+ psi in the front and make much better when loading it down. The R4 are a lot heavier construction and wear better than turfs on hard rocky ground. I've been on turfs for 20+ years and 4500 hours on my BX. It has been beat but still goes to work every day.

I know it's been a little while, but a few years ago you could buy a set of tires and rims for a BX for about $400.
See the dealers salesman-Whole Goods.
Good Luck!

Not sure about BX models, but most tractors require new rims when changing tire types.
Good Luck!

Thanks. I wasn't aware of that. If that's the case, I probably will stay with the R4s

The issue with mix and match tires on a fwa tractor (or 4 wheel drive as it's referred) to is the lead-lag ratio and how it impacts the front driveline even when not in 4wd.

You have to maintain the correct lead-lag ratio or you'll eventually have issues with the front drive.

Better be sitting down on tire prices. I just re shod one of my M9000 Kubota's (lots bigger than what you have, with Trelleborg radials and it was almost 6 grand for shoes. heck of a bite.

Yes that's way bigger than my little BX tractor, but still, I think there's a lot more to this than I envisioned. I think I'll just stay with the R4s, and myabe just replace the leaker. Thanks for your reply.

If you have a "leaker" try replacing the valve stem unless you have done that already. The next thing is a bent rim or dirt in the bead which is hard to clean. I had dirt on my front R4 left side outside bead when I ran it low on air. So pried it back cleaned the rim and tire, then applied a bead of rubber tire sealant to the rim and tire and reseated - all good now.

The last time I took it to the shop, they said it was the valve stem and they replaced it. They said they "got it" that time. It's no different, though. I add air weekly. I bought a JACO low tire air pressure gauge, to track it. I believe the rim is bent or deformed. It'll go back again this week. Thanks for your reply.

I'm looking forward to hear what the dealer has to offer for tires with or without rims.
Good Luck!

If you are planning on using your BX25D for working the ground, I'll suggest you stick with the R4s or Ag tires. Turf tires have very poor traction for that kind of activity...my original BX2200 with FEL had them and it was horrible. When I replaced it a year later with a BX22, I went with the Ag tires and it was like night and day. I have not had much issue with turf damage over the past 20 years. Do keep in mind I don't mow with the tractor. I have a ZTR for that.

Thanks Jim. Lots of good reasons to stay with R4s

I would take a look at R14's or Carlisle Versa-Turfs, especially over R4's.

I was having my plans put on hold too many times due to tire issues…

My solution was foam filling… no more flats or adding air to pump up.

Foam is by the pound so small tires are less due to size… a bonus is more stability with added weight close to the ground.
