I read recently that the new Ford Lightening comes with charging cables for when you come across an EV with a dead battery. That might be a solution for if you stay out to long plowing or mowing. They even sell an adapter to fit a Tesla!

Yeah, but the adapter is so you can use the Ford to charge the Tesla, from what I've read it won't work on a Tesla charger.
how is the person making minimum wage or just above, who barely pays their bills, going to afford to go out and buy a $40k+ EV? just not going to happen in any significant numbers.
Other than maybe a leaf or a Bolt, where are you gonna find a $40k EV? Sheesh, a $40K anything these days! 😡 Try double that price real world.

I can see electric lawn equipment taking over, especially with easily swappable batteries that can be charged inside. Tractor? Not so much. I'd venture that many or our tractors live outside under a tarp, quite a ways from where there's electricity. Mine does.
Mice chewing on wires is a problem for many...bad enough on a diesel, a hugely expensive repair on an electric.

I saw a news video of Biden and his entourage driving through Washington...his limo, 5 or 6 full sized SUVs...all internal combustion engines and those vehicles probably got no more than 10 MPG, if that...
So, the first one going EV had better be Biden or the rest of us can tell him to kiss our azzes
I believe there is a government policy in place to transition to EVs for federal vehicles. While certainly a symbolic gesture, I'm not sure a wholesale policy is a good idea at this time.

There really aren't any EV equivalents of the Tahoes that so many government agencies use, maybe the Rivian, but that company is not on the most solid ground economically so unless we want our tax dollars to further subsidize them I'm not sure that's a good choice. Even if comparable EV SUVs were available, the cost would be considerably higher than than an ICE version, plus they'd need to install charging capabilities at great cost, and guess whose pocket that's going to come out of.

If/when EVs become mainstream, they need to get there on their own merits, and I don't think we're there yet.

yeah, I picked $40k because that's what there is supposed to be available for EVs. but doubling that just makes it that much more unrealistic that average people can afford to buy EVs.

Was that a car dealer over the weekend, and they're charging $10k on top of MSRP. Just a bad time to buy a new vehicle.

You can buy one new for 40 grand. Tell me where, I'll go and get one.

No, and I have a better reason to than most because I already have a 7kw upgradeable to a 10kw solar system on my house. It would mean I get my fuel for free.

A couple if months ago I bought a brand new car but it wasnt an EV. It is a 2022 Subaru Outback limited....no turbos.

It will be another 6 years before I will think about buying an EV.

I live in the rust belt with high humidity and cold damp winters.

I have almost 12kw, upgradable to another 3 or 4 kw, and I wouldn't consider an EV today, no one makes a long bed (8') EV pickup, I don't think anyone makes an affordable EV pickup yet.
Glad I bought my pickup in Jan 2020 before all the stupidity started.

My take on renewable energy simply is, when the sun don't shine or the wind don't blow, it's an expensive rock. This country is gonna find out the tard way that cutting baseload capacity derived from fossil fuels and nuclear is gonna bit them in the butt. Kind of like Europe is finding out presently.

While I like the idea of a quieter tractor with more torque, I probably wouldn't buy one simply because I like to be self-sufficient. When an ice storm takes down a bunch of trees and shuts down the grid, I use my tractor to clear the road, then power my property with a PTO generator until grid power is restored. From what I've heard and read about EV's, there isn't an at-home, homestead-sized, sustainable power source that is capable of recharging them in a timely (useful) manner. So, my tractor usage would be solely dependent on the power grid properly functioning, which is the exact opposite of when I need my tractor the most.

I realize that statement is a bit redundant, since (most) tractors are dependent on a supply of diesel fuel. But, I can store enough fuel to last through an outage. If my EV tractor battery dies and I don't have a way to recharge it until grid power is restored, I'm up a creek.

If I had a reliable, efficient way to recharge an EV tractor using off-the-grid renewable sources, I'd probably own one. But, I won't be purchasing one until that technology has been around for a number of years at least.

I can see inroads into the smaller 'hobby' tractor market but for an ag application, won't be in my lifetime.

What are we hearing about the all electric Kubota skid steer?

Nope. Not interested in a solution when there's no problem.
Seems to be the most popular thing in the world today. Create billions to trillion dollar solutions for non-existent or marginal problems.
Follow the money.

here (maybe everywhere) they talk about having people's EV's power their house when power goes out....so then if the outage lasts long enough, I'm without power to the house and no power in my vehicle to go anywhere. Seems like a terrible idea living in a state with a 3rd world power grid.

I completely agree. I wish there was a reasonable way to convert brush piles to electricy. I spend a lot of time and energy burning brush, staring at the waste of energy and thinking about how to capture that energy. The only reasonable wood fired electricity generators I've seen are city scale. Transporting my brush to a generator is not worth the effort.

I'd like something about 6-10 kW that I feed branches (not split or pelletized). Something like a contractor generator that runs on wood gas with an integrated chipper (big chipper).... everytime I assemble all of the peices in my head, I realize that it woud be a pretty complictated (probably delicate) device. (yes, there is magic betweet branch and clean wood gas that involves drying that requires time)

When they quit selling me fuel, I'll be making lots of french fries so I can make my own. LOL

We already have the solution to fuel prices and cleaning the environment. It's called corn based fuels.
But the government doesn't get enough kickbacks from farmers I guess.

I presume you mean ethanol? Doesn't seem to be a lot of love for that here on TBN.

Nothing wrong with it if handled correctly. And would help farmers.

So, I dropped one of my vehicles off at the dealership for an appointment around noon. Some guy pulled up in a new Rivian truck for a charge. I hadn’t seen a Rivian up close so I went over to take a look and he was more than happy to show me around the vehicle. It was nice…perhaps better executed than a Tesla and he was a super nice guy. I left soon after. I returned at around 4 to pick up my vehicle. He was still there charging….sorry, I refuse to do that.

Mike
