a neighbor had to large red chow. type dogs breed never learned.
started to have broken fences and calves would;ld stay in the feed yard instead going into the fields. one-morning fixing fence saw the 2 dogs, gut full returning direction of there home. Found a pedigreed Holstein yearling calf in the field hamstrung and partly eaten . one had held face and the second had gutted the calf. Called the owner of the calf and he knew the dogs drove to their address. told neighbor what the dogs still laying beside the porch had done. she said wasn't her dogs. this aggravated the calf owner and he went to pick up got a '22 rifle. dogs now were 1/4 mile away he shot in their direction. very much country area.
I was charged with accessory in the Killing of the dogs. (both still alive)
He was charged with the endangerment of children in the trailer home .
one female dog lived long enough to give birth to a litter. The husband of the wife had shot the male. the legal fees and I was charged and the prosecutor wanted me to take anger management class.
It is not worth the legal hassle or ignorants of the elected officials. there was no concern of the dead calf.
no longer report a dog in the field it just doesn't come out.
illegal to shoot on public roads. across public roads or interfere with the lives of those too lazy to work. drawing the funds allocated by government agencies. they vote.

You neighbor was beyond negligent IMO. Who in the "F" shoots in general direction not knowing exactly what they are aiming at????

I'll stand by my comment. If YOU are on PUBLIC property and dogs are acting aggressive towards you to the point that you are in fear for your life, I'd have no qualms shooting the dogs as long as they are on public property. That said, you also have to know where you are shooting at and where your bullet could go if you miss or it penetrates the dog.

If any of my dogs killed livestock, I couldn't blame any livestock owner for killing my dogs in the act.

Owning a dog means you know where you're dogs are 24/7. That's something that "country owners" of dogs seem to forget because they have a bunch of land (at least in my area).

Over the County that you reside in always, are you in an Incorporated Town/Village area with a Village Police force.
Or in a rural area of a County. In my area we have more Deputy Sheriffs then State Troopers.

Exactly. Although it should be easier to get satisfaction the bottom line is that if the complainant isn’t serious enough to get a lawyer involved then the police don’t want to get in the middle of feuding neighbors. Trying to “get even” is a recipe for disaster.

Tampering with a roadside mailbox is a Federal Offense. I know what I'd do about it, I'd get a PO box at the local postoffice and remove the mailbox entirely.

Far as the dogs go, I know what I'd do but I cannot post it here other than to say... BANG

If I had crappy neighbors like that, I think I'd gift wrap some poop and send it to them as well.

Sheriffs of the county you live in, have jurisdiction all over that county.

I think that depends on the state. Here the sheriff's office seems to mostly serve warrants, divorce papers, etc. or provide security at the courthouse.

This. ^^^ The Postal Service is really the first place to contact and have jurisdiction. See what they say before contacting local or state law enforcement.

Not sure what a local lawyer would do or could do, other than sending a letter to cease and desist. Postal Service would be my first contact to see what they say.

Regarding the loose dogs, does your county have a leash law? I would think that would be a local issue to solve not the state police.

Bear spray is supposed to work wonders at distracting bears assuming you can by pepper spray in NY.

What are the county ordances for dog in your area??

They instituted a new set of ordinances about 7 years ago in our area.

It puts the responsibility of a loose animal right on the animals owner. If your dogs aggressive, and on someone elses property, then you can get fined around $1,000. If you have a group of them that you allow to run loose, and only one in the pack is being aggressive, you can be fined for each individual dog in that group if they all belong to you.

My sister in law ran into an issue with the neighbors dogs coming over and being aggressive on her property. Was two of them.

Neighbor didn't give a hoot what there dogs did. Told my sister in law sorry about your luck.

Cops went over and talked to the neighbor. While talking to my sister in law on her property, the dogs came over and started being aggressive again.

Cop talked to the neighbor. Neighbor told the cop to kiss off. Cop got mad and fined them with the max fine per dog. Said he and the other officers were gonna do a regular patrol through the area. If the dogs are off the owners property, they will get more fines.
