Neighbor thinks pot growers are in the area

The NC National Guard used to use copters to find pot growing in the woods. Don't know if they still do this though. I do remember them finding quite a big grow operation in some woods along a major road.

Indiana State Police still do this. We have them fly around our side of the county every so often.

That could be because it's NOT LEGAL in most jurisdictions. Federal law and state law are different. Even in most states where it's legal to consume it's illegal to grow.
But the times they are a changing.
10 states that have legalized consumption also legalized growing small amounts for personal use, and some allow commercial grows with permits.

If I suspected someone was growing on my land I'd carefully check it out. If you're on 5 acres it's unlikely to be a big illegal operation of the kind that posts guards or sets booby traps. It's more likely to be kids. But I'd be careful just the same.

If you find some, notify the police.

When CA legalized, the number of big illegal grows on other people's land went way down.

Wondering if anyone has had to address this issue.
First off, I have no open areas to get much light. Not sure if that is good for this crop or not. Maybe I don't need to worry about it if they need 1/2 day of sunlight.

My instincts are to not start a fight without knowing who the enemy is but my guess is that it is some locals looking to make a few bucks.
Not interested in having the forest set on fire as pay back either, it isn't worth it.

I am too remote to get sherrif involved. I am thinking that that best method might be to slowly kill it with some roundup so they think its just a bad place to plant it.
If I see someone on my land, I would chase them off but guessing I will never see them as you can hear anything in the woods with all the leaves and sticks on the ground.

Anyone else solved this?
If you suspect a grow, look for the water. Not a seep or seasonal creek. Cannabis needs a bunch of the wet stuff, I think more than most legal agriculture. If you can't find the source look for supply lines or listen for a generator/inverter running a pump.

You are NEVER too remote. Your sheriff works for you. Period. If he doesn't show any interest in your concerns tell him you won't show any interest in his reelection campaign. A ticked off land owner no matter how big is bad ju-ju for any elected official, the last thing he wants is others to hear of his indifference and choose to find another that will.

One of the men who helped build my house had a relative many, many, decades ago who ran a still. The still was owned by the Sheriff!

During an election year, the Sheriff would want to show he was doing something about moonshiners, so he would drive to where HIS still was located. He would stop a good distance from the still, and yell, "John! John! I know you are in there come on out!" Course, John would run off, the Sheriff would bust up his own still, and publicize his finding of a still. This way, the Sheriff showed he was doing his job, but without busting up someone else's still. That would cost votes and cause other problems.:LOL:

Funny! No doubt surrounding stills would compensate him for the loss!

Many years ago, there was a large patch of pot growing on our property. It was wild, not cultivated. Very common around here, as they used to grow hemp for the big wars. I called the county police and they told me to spray it. I told them I couldn't spray it because A: spray was too expensive and B: it was right next to a waterway and the spray could contaminate the water. So they came out and pulled it all out themselves. I think that was in the early 90's.
Probably took it back to the station, dried it and smoked it...lol
