I'm just an old man that has learned how to read patterns... and it is clear to me and most of the world that we are moving to EV'S come hell or high water and neither you or I can slowdown or stop the EV revolution that had hit critical mass for leaders like Tesla. VW recent commitment to spend $35 billion in the next 5 years to be a serious EV revolution player.
More likely just another guy who can form an opinion...just like the rest of us

For a while our electric company was offering a rebate/incentive for those on the lines who upgraded to a newer more energy efficient appliance.

What if somone at some level offered a similar thing for installation of a 220V outlet upon purchase of an EV?

Maybe we should be writing our congressmen...... ?

It is my 'opinion' VW's commitment to spend an average of 7 billion dollars annually for the next 5 years to catch up to Tesla in the EV Revolution shows the EV Revolution has hit critical mass. ;)

Battery prices wil drop and no Ice car can compete on price, a EV will be much cheaper to buy, use and own. Most of people's driving is in the local area, many will keep a ICE for those needs that a cheap EV is unsuitable for.

I don't think electric cars, and trucks will take off like they think. The battery's cost a fortune and don't last. There is one charging spot where I live that's not enough for this country.
You could at least post a map to that charger, i might need it if i get an EV.

I'm joking of course. I think the nearest charger, not at my home, is probably 30-40 minutes away. Well, i don't own a charger but if i had an EV, it would be at my home.

The people in this blog are happy to get the wiring done for $2,500 and that does not include the price of the charger.

"I paid $2,500 for:
  • Increase the main breaker from 100 > 125 amps
  • A new subpanel, while rerouting some of my switches
  • Routing under my house with conduit about under 50ft
  • Weather proof 14-50 plug
  • Permits and Inspection
Worth every penny."

People have raised valid concerns about EVs

  • Price to Purchase
  • Battery Range
  • Lack of Public Charging Stations
  • Cost to Install Home Charging Outlet
All of these concerns should have a dampening effect on sales, and yet ..... Demand for EVs far outstrips supply.

When the person quoted above factors in the $2,500 cost for their home charging station into their decision to buy an EV and says "Worth every penny", it should give a indication that people really want EVs. Like it or not, EVs are going to become commonplace on America's roads.

Home chargers have been sold as a package with the car, my neighbor installed one in his garage just for his children both hav EVs and a 16a wall socket was to flimsy and has a possibility to get warm.

This charger costs 550$ plus installation.

And if you are lucky an have 400V grid it gives 22kw.

Not very relevant for the US but it might be interesting for the discussion.

But that is not a charger. It is an EVSE, Electric Vehicle Service Equipment. It is nothing but an ultra safe extension cord. It knows nothing about batteries, only provides AC current to the vehicle. Has GFI, over-current monitoring, and the unusual thing of providing a signal to the vehicle informing it of how much current the vehicle is allowed to draw. Current is not switched on until a connection is made.

People are idiots and if you put a sign on the "charger" stating only 15A is permitted someone will try for 16A and if that works for a few minutes then 17A... The EV obeys what the EVSE offers, no human override. The EV can use less than what is offered if desired.

The point here in L2 (AC) charging the EV is controlling the process. The regulation occurs in the EV. For DC an external "charger" is used. The DC charger informs the EV of what is available then the EV tells the charger what to give it. As the battery charges the EV tells the external DC charger to reduce current.

The original Tesla High Power Wall Connector (note: not "charger") could serve up to 80A at 240VAC. Later models may have been limited to 72A as that is the current maximum new Teslas accept via AC. Just because the WC was designed for high current doesn't mean all are configured to provide that much. Mine is configured to only offer 40A to the vehicle. It is on a 50A circuit.
