how many ibc totes do you have? I only saw 3. Youre going to need a lot more than 3. I have 12 and its almost not enough for my efficient small home. I can get through a Michigan winter with less than 12, but you ought to stay a year ahead of your needs.

Deezler, I was in Michigan during winter about 1969 or 1970. My grandfather died and my mom loaded us kids into a 1964 AMC rambler and drove from Miami to Detroit. Winter in Virginia isn’t winter in Michigan by any stretch of the imagination.
We have 8 totes total. 3 are being used for water and 4 are filled with fire wood. I will acquire more. My guess is that I will burn 3-4 cords of wood. But that is just a guess. This year we will only be there on weekends and a few week nights so I will be stoking up the stove trying to be comfortable and charge the cement with heat enough to keep the place comfortable. I expect to lose the battle but I’m fighting it no matter what. Where we lived before, I had a large insert jammed into chimney on the far end of a 2 story 2300 sf house. I kept about 9 cord of wood and burned 3 a year. I designed this house to be much more efficient with wood heat and I am hoping that I was correct in my guestimations. Only time will tell.

As for the splitter. I am sure it will need service and hopefully not a new engine. It has an old Tucumseh 10 HP (made in USA) motor but It’s been idle for a few years.

David, You are really going to have to look a lot more closely at nailers for drywall, and plan ahead a bit more to save you extra work later. Your latest video is a good example. In the screen shot below I marked a red box where you are going to have to add a 2x nailer so the drywall on the main wall isn't flapping in the breeze. Just above your level, to your right, in the pic.

It is going to be very hard to nail that in place given the 2x4 you put in there being barely overlapping the main wall stud. As other have mentioned, plumbing walls should typically be 2x6 to make your life easier, but that is water under the bridge. Remember that for your next house When planning ahead here, it could have been easier to put the nailer in first and then rip the 2x4 down to butt against the nailer, or you could have used a 2x6 stud there in which case the nailer would have enough wood to nail into more easily. Alternately you could just fir out the rest of the wall to the same depth and essentially turn it into a 2x6 wall and then have one flat wall to deal with, and avoid the tiny inside corner. That may or may not cause other problems, but you should be able to figure it out from looking at it.

Given the stage you are at in the build, you need to start looking ahead and planning for nailers all over the place. Around here, the drywall guys won't add them. "that is the framers job" so they will just skip it until the framer fixes it (you, in this case). Sure an occasional mistake happens, but you really want to make sure they have sturdy supports on all corners to attach the drywall to.

The order of the work really makes a difference. Some things are very hard to come back and put in once you have gone ahead and done something else, but others are no big deal. It really sucks when you find you need a nailer somewhere but there is a wire or PEX tube in the way. Things like that cause a lot of extra rework and time, but it is inevitable that you will have an oopsie here and there. Your goal is to minimize those so you only do the work once.

So I went by the drilling place in Louisa today. Drilling service Inc. I told the guy I was building a house and I was ready to hook up the well told him what volume of water I needed what my expected usage was going to be said I was trying to appropriately sized the pump for the well. He said “are you a contractor? “
I said “No, there are no contractors. I built the house myself. “
And he said “well ,we only sell to contractors we can’t sell you anything. That’s a corporate decision. “. So I need to find some other place to get the stuff that I need for the pump and the line otherwise I’m stuck with just buying stuff from the big box stores. I am sure that I can find someone online to get the stuff from that might just be what I do and buy it and have it shipped. But my intention was to do business with a local company and keep my money local.
I have run into this sort of thing before. When I’ve tried to sell a house by myself I got a lot of pushback and sort of an aggressive negative nature from realtors. I’ve had the same situation with lawyers when I was trying to do something myself there are a lot of things that you can do yourself if you’re allowed to but there are certain industries that try to lock the common person out of being able to do anyThing without the paid assistance of somebody in that industry. I have no problem whatsoever with paying the going price for a good or service that I need to get from somebody but the idea that I can walk into the store that sells the place and they won’t sell it to me unless I pay a middleman a 30 or 60% mark up Just does not sit well.

Man, just say yes to the contractor question from now on. I got frustrated with that a couple times during my house build too. Or things like concrete, if you say you're a contractor, you get 10% off for no reason. Basically yes, you are a contractor, operating under your own name, mainly only for yourself, haha. Its not like places demand to see your license or insurance or anything.

True your winters will be much more mild than mine, but, my house is quite a bit smaller. We only burn 3-4 cords per year also, which is basically all 12 of my IBC totes. So they need to be full of dried wood before every winter starts, for me.

I bet your splitter will fire up just fine. Just give it a solid chonk of starter spray to rev it up the first time, and some fresh gas.

CMC supply, closest is Bedford. They delivered rolls of pipe to my in-laws in Harrisonburg. I bought my geothermal units from them.

Ferguson won't sell to non-contractors, at least around here. And they are total jerks about it too. The funny part to me is that they also own Build.com which sells most of the same stuff to DIY and homeowners but don't go into one of their stores and expect anything good.

Supplyhouse.com is a great online resource for lots of serious plumbing and HVAC stuff. Great service and super fast shipping (though who knows shipping since Covid as it has been a while since I ordered from them...)

Buckeye, I know where the Nolands is. I have never been in there.
Dstig1, I love the Ferguson’s here. I have been buying from them for years and got all my Uponer pex from them. They also delivered the 48 inch culvert pipes that I used to build my bridge. I didnt even think about them selling well pump. I will try them first and if they don’t have it, I will try Nolands. I travel to richmond regularly so there are other options also.

Yes, I had a great experience with CMC. The owner is a great guy. They drop shipped my geo units to the house and delivered my ground coil pipes to in-laws, so I didn’t have to drive all the way to Roanoke from MD. I opened an account at a more local geo supply place for fittings and small stuff. I have tools to “weld” HDPE pipe up to 2” or so. I also ordered replacement geo pumps online from a place in Ohio, 2 day shipment.

When building, I got most of my plumbing stuff, including well pump from Nolands. My plumber neighbor did order a bunch of it for me, as he got a better discount. I finally opened an account there, but haven’t had need to buy anything there now in years.

At one point I did establish an LLC company, but I don’t have that any more.

The Fergusons in the main metro were really bad. I mean they would literally bark at you to get out as we don't sell to your kind here. It was ridiculous. We had one of them that was situatued outside the metro in a more rural area near me and those guys were willing to work with you. ...Until recently... They said they got word from on high to stop doing that I guess. But if your local ones will work with you then they are good. That attitude that we got just really ticked me off a lot. I have money and want to give it to you but you won't take it? Really???
