European setup, 2 axle COE with a 3 axle trailer. In Europe standard trailers are not higher than 4 meter. In the UK apparently overweight/height/width permits are obtained as easy as brown bread, so maybe this trailer is a UK special thats higher.

Although the sign is definately wrong, this trailer is by no means taller than 4.5m

Asphalt paving can be a ***** though, when i went to school there was an overpass under which they repaved the surface. The added 10cm caused a lot of truck jams, that had been passing under there for a decade.
The above posting's pic is from Mar 4 2021.
UK trucker forum: "past at least 5 road signs stating bridge height and hit bridge right by a purpose built turning area"

Looks like this company should do a better job of educating its drivers...

Here's one from Mar 11 2019:

Nov 1 2011: This one apparently just nicked a bridge and then had trouble turning. As you can see, similar 15'0" bridge

On the way to pick up a Nissan that tossed a rod through the oil pan I can across this VW with some $5 ratchet straps placed semi loosely at the rear in an x pattern.

I would call this towing wrong.

My 4 tire basket ratchets on the Nissan are what I call good. Each rated 3300 lb work, 10,000 lb break and holding a (maybe) 4500 lb truck. View attachment 711040

It could be legal, just barely, but I wouldn't trust it.

From the FMCSA handbook:

Securement requirement

  • Use at least two tiedowns at both the front and rear of the cargo to prevent movement.
    • Side-to-side
    • Forward and rearward
    • Vertically
Note: More tiedowns may be required to satisfy the general cargo securement requirements. The Standard states: "The sum of the working load limits from all tiedowns must be at least 50% of the weight of the cargo."

A 1' tie-down has a WLL from 400#-1100#. Assuming 4 tie-downs at 500# WLL (TSC cheap tie-downs - $10.99 for 4) since we can't see the front, you get 2000# total. Depending on year the car is from 3400# to 3800# curb weight.

I couldn't get a picture of it yesterday, but I passed a guy going the other way that had a pretty good sized skid steer on a flatbed equipment trailer, and the only thing holding it down was ONE ratchet strap that went up and over the cab on the skid steer, from one trailer fender over the top to the other trailer fender.

All I had time to do was say "YIKES!"

The mandatory brake force of highway going vehicles is between 45-55% of mass, here in Europe.
So WLL of all tiedowns (in all directions) of 50% of mass, sounds a bit low in an emergency braking. 25% front, 25% rear... brake hard with 50% of mass and youre at twice the WLL of your straps, or three times if you use them diagonally...

In Germany they are very strict about the new tiedown rules, just one ragged edge on a strap and you pay a fortune. Speeding is cheap there, however.

On the way to work i frequently see (at least every year) a concrete retaining wall dropped off at the roundabout. When i see them driving with L shaped retaining wall elements of 6 ton each, with a single strap thrown over them, i get angry. They allways topple towards the heavy end of the L, and if a car happens to drive on the 2nd lane of the roundabout where these elements topple, those things are lethal. Its just appalling how little responsibility some truckers have, even though accidents are frequent.

"weighs 3,000 lb and meant for 8-ft box but it works in my 6-1/2"

Well, "works" might be a misnomer.
