It looks like Indiana has one of the highest fuel taxes. It seems like they could fill some chuckholes around here. I have to drive off the road to avoid the holes. This road hasn't been maintained in years.

That's part of the plan.
And that’s the part I don’t like. Raising taxes to force people to buy something unaffordable to a large swath of the population is discriminatory
If only one group, the rich, can afford teslas, that is completely unfair to low-middle income earners. Furthermore, the low-middle income earners take an additional tax hit at the pump.

Heavy vehicles and equipment do much more damage to roads than light vehicles. Are they taxed appropriately to help pay for the damage they do?

Paid $4.09 for regular gas yesterday in NV. Ouch.

Par for the course. Say one thing - do exactly the opposite. As long as folks fall for the talk v the walk - it will continue.

Washington car license used to be value based. Then it was limited to $30. So the state keeps adding fees.

Here's one of my recent total cost for a 2006 Jeep Liberty.

Heavy vehicles are taxed every time they move. In my state a passenger vehicle tag is $29. A 26,000 pound plate is like $450. I don’t even know what an 80,000 pound plate is. Probably $2500. Then there’s fuel tax. A heavy vehicle obviously burns a lot more fuel than a Prius. Then there’s an additional fuel tax beside the built in one. Then there’s dot numbers, inspections, fines which are nothing but a tax. Then heavy vehicles and parts are expensive all of which is subject to sales tax.

.....but huge farm equipment owners are not paying road taxes, right?

No, or sales tax. Or obeying pretty much any transport law. And they’re cashing in on subsidies while they’re at it.

Taxation needs to be broken out in order to take "social politics" out of the cost of goods. Fuel /energy IS the present day politic!

$1.41 per LITRE here currently, for the Regular unleaded (that's $5.37 per US gallon of basic fuel)
seems like a lot.

87 in Bushnell, Fl was $2.68 a gallon, Diesel $2.85 a gallon.

Wrong.
Broad brushing all farmers into one category just makes you look stupid. How about all the farmers who own a family farm and never or rarely drive on roads?
I drive roads from one field to another for 30 years and I have never touched another motor vehicle with any piece of farm machinery. What you think about that? I bet you have been in an accident that’s your fault in last 30 years. :sneaky:
Subsidies: Hay farmers get no subsidies.
Sales tax: I pay sales tax on everything I buy that isn’t farm related. You don’t think my family buys consumer goods, cars? Goes on vacations?
Every input a farmer buys for farming is purchased at retail prices, yet all farmers products are sold at wholesale prices. Ever think about that? Name another trade like that.
You should try doing a little research sometime before you throw insults around like that.

Here we go again.
So does a farmer that drives on a road once a week need to pay a road tax to drive from 1 plot of farm land to another, even if it’s only 1/4 mile down the road?
How would you tax the farmer? Put a little meter on his tractors and have the information go to a bureaucrats office?
Large circumference, low psi AG tires don’t do the same damage as a 110 PSI multi axle dump truck tire. They just don’t….

You want to see untaxed road damage? Go to Amish country and look at what steel-wheeled Amish wagons to to the edges of the roads. Theres road damage everywhere they live in large communities from them.

If you and 4750 are so ticked off that farmers get subsidies, then blame the government, NOT the farmer. The government makes the subsidies and grants the tax breaks, not the farmer.

i read somewhere that all the delivery trucks for online shopping are doing serious damage to the roads.

it went on to point out the roads surrounding the amazon fulfillment centers are getting beat up.

gotta luv that....fulfillment centers, says it all.

Yep, a loaded UPS truck with skinny 95psi tires delivering a bottle of shampoo does more road damage than a car getting it from local drug store.
We better hurry up and tax them, too.

The delivery vehicles are paying fuel tax, registration fees, and are delivering items that are taxed. The neighbors running farm equipment every day weigh more, like the huge manure wagon and feed wagon.

People like me buy enough taxed fuel for offroad use to make up for the miniscule damage that farm equipment might do while travelling between fields.
