Windows 11

I'm on Win7 too, and will stay on it until it no longer functions, like if MS finds a way to send an update that breaks it. If that happens, I'll move to one of the Linux flavors, there are lots of choices. Would NEVER go to a Mac, I like to decide what is best for me.
At this point I have Win7 working perfectly, never a hiccup or glitch, and it does what I want it to do. I do a restart every week or two, just to clean up any memory leaks or other problems.
I Would like to move up to a Ryzen machine, but the Win7 installation doesn't load motherboard drivers for the keyboard or mouse, so you can't run the install. Would like to find a workaround for that.

Microsoft "upgrades" continuously to add features and fix issues that 99% of us don't use or experience. I often wonder how (or maybe more correctly, why) we ever let Microsoft become the standard OS in the first place.

Win 7 here forever, too. Everything just works. Home PC, and the ranch laptop.

This PC here in town is left on continuous. It never needs a reboot except when forced by software updates.

Even XP is still very usable aside from badly outdated security. I just retired an XP laptop that was dedicated to host an ancient but high quality scanner that I had retired the ranch, that needed a 32-bit OS. When the 15? year old XP laptop finally failed to boot, that was the end for it and the scanner too. I need to go find a $10 thrift store scanner for my very occasional need at the ranch - maybe 5 instances in 5 years. Or, just use my phone to copy documents like my kids do.

Who needs Win 11? Is that on a perpetual subscription plan like car registration?

Microsoft calls Windows a "service". Perhaps with Windows 11 they might start charging a monthly subscription fee. If that happens it will be the end of Windows. Linux will take over the world!

I really doubt that. Linux is fine for servers or control modules in vehicles, etc., but it's not very user friendly. Indeed, I've found it to be about the most obtuse operating system I've ever used. Way too many hoops must be jumped thru (usually requiring command-line operations) if you want to run any software that didn't come with it.

I like the idea of a "free" operating system, but to me it's more trouble than it's worth.

I got burned by Linux once, and haven't been very interested since. Way back in the early days (when I was responsible for a Netware LAN), I bought a thick and expensive book that included a Linux CD. I spent an entire week trying to make it work including hours of slow (1200 baud) downloads. It never did work. Much later I read in a Usenet group that the included CD had a bad driver or something and was requesting to download the same useless file, so that CD install was doomed from the beginning. If no one had put notice of this problem on the download site, it seemed pretty user unfriendly.

Linux has come a long way in becoming a viable desktop operating system with intuitive "Windows" like interfaces...
...Adding packages (software) is easier than with many Windows applications and the system does not have to be restarted after installations...

I suggest anyone interested to download or purchase (free for shipping etc) of any of the more popular distributions...
...there is some difference between the distributions so read the overviews and choose one more catered to your computer uses and habits etc...

Well, yes "they" did. They simply recanted. I'm still not converting. I like to have a choice on my privacy. That's not possible with Win10 or now Win11.

As a side note; I stopped running the Microsoft Updates when "they" tried to hammer my software and change my boot option. I still lost some Media Center functions. And they continued to try and delete my "Host" file.

Last year I spent a month trying to switch from Windows to Linux. I agree with you, too many hoops, a PITA. But things will be different if Windows dies. The demand for a user-friendly OS would be enormous and as a result central control/develoment by a large corporation is likely to happen. Unfortunately right now Linux is an incomprehensible hodgepodge that most non-technical folks can not grasp.
