We had a bright hardworking woman in the sales department get a considerable pay increase. She tried to turned it down as it would put her over the limit for free state healthcare for her kids. Opinions and her future were severely damaged.

That is a problem. Maybe if government programs were setup to encourage people to transition off government benefits instead of cutting them off all at once more people would go to work.

Agreed. When you have to turn down a pay raise just so you can afford healthcare for your children you know we as a country took a very wrong turn somewhere.

Here's another one. A cousin, who's like another brother to me, was a hard working guy who would give you the shirt off his back. He went to school to become a welder and got a job at a plant while building his house at night. He got tired of that so took a job which trained him to be a licensed oil burner repairman. He's meticulous to a tee, no matter what project he is working on.
After a while he went out on his own as a fabrication welder and in no time had a clientele built up. At 38, with 2 kids in HS he was diagnosed with degenerative kidney disease. He went out on disability and went back to school to learn computers while waiting for a transplant.
He graduated just as the bottom dropped out of that market...
After his new kidney he tried to go back to work, but getting back into the market and giving up his Medicare would have meant working full time just to pay for the meds he needs just to keep his body from rejecting the donated kidney. Over the last 20 years he's gone from an independent hard working guy to somebody who stresses about what he needs to stay alive... which means he's become completely dependent on "the government." He knew that the time would come when he would need another transplant (His brother donated the first, his sister is donating this time... something they decided on 23 years ago.)
That time is now. As I type this, he is going through his nightly dialysis. He was all ready for the transplant last year, until Covid raised it's ugly head.

But I digress. Had there been a way for him to go back to work without worrying about paying for his meds than he would have done so. Some members here will say that he should have planned better, yet how many can honestly say that at 38 years old they could have made 2000$/month prescription payments for the rest of their life?

There seems to be consensus here that work is better than handouts for able people.

It is basic common sense.

BUT-

How many times have you seen or heard the media pointing any of this out? Investigating people sitting at home v working in restaurants or stores?

How many “leaders” point this out?

How many “leaders” stoke the we v they mantra on income inequities? It’s not your fault you don’t have what the rich have. It’s the rich people’s fault.

Answer is ZERO. Nada.

Yet - and everyone best understand this - those that want to give away everything are the current “leaders”. It will get way worse than now.

Yes, we can. There something satisfying about hard work and knowing one earned what they have.
I agree 110%. You don't know anyone who works harder than i do. Not everyone is looking for a free ride but....

Just look around. Many folks don't subscribe to our way of thinking! FOLKS FROM ALL WALKS OF LIFE!

When many of us were growing up, there was no alternative...except maybe the dreaded "poor house". You had no choice except to educate and train yourself to make a living and support a family. I was pretty sure when I got my education, I was going to be kicked out of the house...

This seems to be a good place for a rant, so here I go. I really don't think the main problem is that people are stupid or lazy, I think it's lazy thinking. A lot of people don't make the effort to think things through and for the long term. We see the stories about how lucrative welfare can be compared to working, but most poor people don't avail themselves of the benefits available because they don't bother to learn about them. Example: a major portion of the people who got medical insurance under the ACA actually were added to Medicaid and were already eligible.

Whenever our legislators create these new benefit programs, they seem to always add hard on/off income level points instead of gradually reducing the benefit, which provides an incentive to game the system by maintaining income below a point.

It's hard to be low income in todays world and I'm generally in favor of most support programs. However, they seem to always be badly administered. As crazy as it sounds, I'm very interested in the results of the basic income guarantee concept to replace a lot of the complicated programs.

Agree 100%. I have what I have earned; I have zero sympathy for those with less who have not applied themselves to a good life. That's on them, not on me...
It will not be "on them".
They will take you down, and you will not be able to do a damm thing about it!

This ^^ You want less crime? You want to see fewer handouts? You want to pay less in taxes? You better make sure the poor are happy and can make money, otherwise they will very much make it your problem. Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette learned that the hard way.

Not a valid analogy. The cause of poverty in this country is crime, not the other way around. It's cultural problem that's wrapped up in welfare economics. Stop the crime, get fathers back in the home, along with education, and the opportunities will take care of themselves.

The poor will never be happy. It isn’t the goal.

The goal is to keep the poor feeling bad, divide, bait and keep power. That is the one and only goal.

Happy people don’t fall for divisiveness.

That is going to require a complete reset of society; but I agree.

About 30% of my business is landscaping. I am very backed up on jobs right now. I have job openings posted on several job sites.

When I do get someone to apply, my first two interview questions are usually:
1. Are you "high" right now?
2. What are you on parole/probation for?

Most restaurants in my area are having to reduce hours and/or close a couple of days a week because they can't find workers.

And it doesn't seem to matter what you offer to pay.

Unemployment must be very close to 0% right now. Almost every business that I know of, is looking for employees. Even our local McDonalds still has not re-opened their dining area and are still only 'drive thru'.

I went to my favorite (easily the most consistent) restaurant for dinner Friday night. The Caesar salad came with a small tub of Dale’s dressing. Good grief.

The grouper plate tasted a bit like fish sticks, perhaps it was freezer burn. The tartar sauce was also not made on site.

None of this is how things were handled before.

I’m happy he is still in business and I feel for him since he obviously no longer has access to competent staff.

Most of the servers are family members and I’m sure that is the only reason he still opens the doors.

This morning I went to Waffle House to get breakfast after the gym . Only half the booths were open due to short staffing. The server was bussing the table as I ate lol

I’m done.

Initially I felt a bit guilty for buying a Big Green Egg grill last summer. They aren’t cheap but what comes off that grill is better than anything that comes from a restaurant. They way things are now, I feel like I made the right move.

You wouldn’t believe the pizzas!
