One of the things I really liked on my Android cell phones of the past was the ability to record both sides of a phone call. The states I lived in allowed that and I didn't need to record many calls. It was mainly when I dealt with contractors (rarely) or fast food orders for the wife (more often).
But now they seemed to have killed that capability unless one goes with an app that requires total submission- control of all recordings, contacts, etc.
And it seems to have been done on most android phones but I know it's gone on my Samsungs.

Anybody have any idea why it was done?

Not just Samsung, all Android. Pi$$es me off as I had a recording app on my phone I used all the time when I was going thru my divorce so I didn't end up with a 'he said she said' scenario. Protection of privacy so they say. I know the app you're referring to and I tried it but had no luck getting it to work.
Apparently there's some apps out there that will record both sides but you have to use the handsfree mode and the recording quality is crap. Another you have to root the phone, something I was not willing to do.......MIke

Google has suppressed two way phone call recording, on Android 8.1 and higher. Unfortunately, even 3rd party apps are not allowed by Google to record two way phone calls. I don't see Google changing this policy anytime soon.

Don't you LOVE phone software updates that remove features you like using? For years I've been using the 360 panorama feature. Updated the phone and now its gone.

I used to be a samsung fan because they took great photos and were durable. My last two phones suddenly died just out of warranty - first one stopped connecting to the cellular network. My current phone has similar issues now and can't receive incoming calls and needs to be rebooted hourly in order to get working again.

I miss the old phones that simply worked and the batteries lasted a week per charge. Phone stopped working? Pull the battery and reboot. Those days are gone. The cynic in me thinks these "hardware" issues are buy design the same way apple slows down your devices to "improve user experience" after new models come out.

Last I knew it was illegal to record a phonecall unless all parties consented.
