If it is ignition it could be that is why the plug is wet, it stops sparking but sucks in some fuel still. When I had a spark plug go bad you could pull the electrode all the way out the top of the plug.
It’s my understanding that the exhaust side is where you will normally see piston and ring scoring but I suppose that can vary. As far as internal engine problems there just isn’t much that can go wrong, you have a piston, rod and crank. There just isn’t much else to go wrong.
When I rebuilt my saw I didn’t really time it but I probably spent 8 to 12 hours on it. You know how that works, I could do it again in 4 hours.
My wild guess is ignition but who knows. Let us know what the problem was if possible.
