Your neighbor is very lucky to have you so close by !

KC
Thanks so much.
Why these nice people would associate with my wife & I is the biggest mystery of all.
Seriously we do have good trustworthy neighbors.

Only once in all my time out here ( 38+ ) years did I answer my door holding my shotgun. It was dark outside > knock on the door > I asked-"who is it" > no response, but they knocked a second time. I grabbed the shotgun, flipped on the porch light, cracked the door. It was a young fellow and, as I found out, his wife. They said they were lost. Man were they EVER lost. Off the county - one mile down my gravel driveway.

So I invited them in and got them oriented and back on their way. I wasn't too concerned about them being robbers - Wyoming license plates and two young kids in their car.

Otherwise - raccoons having a knock down brawl on my front porch will bring you out of a good sleep. That's happened several times. And a lonely coyote howling right out in the front yard will do the same.
Years ago I was watching TV and the door bell rang. I went and looked out the peep hole and didn't see anything.

Went and sat back down. Immediately upon sitting the door bell rang again. I looked out the peep hole. And didn't see anything again. So I went to the kitchen window and looked to see if I could see someone standing off to the side. No one was there.

Went and sat back down and the bloody door bell rang again.

At this point I'm mad. Grab the ball bat that was stored in the coat closet, ripped open the door, starting to cuss, and ready to whoop some booty

At that point I came up speechless and started laughing my butt off. Here's my neighbors 2yo houdini of a son standing in the doorway in his diaper.

Only thing he would say was "Tasha" which is the name of my 5yo pit bull that absolutely loved kids.

The boy snuck out to come play with my dog.

Well Tasha gave him some kisses real quick, then I scooped him up and took him back home

Met the neighbor just as she was coming around the side of my garage with one of the twin boys in her arms. I had the other one.

The boys would decide they wanted to go visit the neighbors and let themselves out of the house. 1 would always head for the elderly couples house on the east side of their place, and the other always headed west to my house.

They had to install a slide latch on the top of the doors, chain up any ladders and step stools, and put bells on their clothing to keep those toddlers from going on a walk about

We did have something happen not long after moving here 40 years ago. About 2am we're asleep upstairs (summer, window open) I hear gravel crunching sound...look out and way at end of our driveway I could make out a car parked there. So I grab my S&W .44 magnum. I'm watching a few minutes and they're parked not far from a different friend/neighbor's house. I could barely tell it looked like a few people in car, dome light on. Finally I thought what the heck and peeled one off over the car.
Everyone knows how loud a .44 is, especially echoing out a room. So it was "BOOM"...then I hear POW-POW-POW-POW-POW rapid fire.
The car disappeared!
The next day I was talking to that neighbor and he was at his window with his M1 and a 30 round clip. As soon as I fired he walked a bullet trail over to them.
We never knew who it was or kind of car except it was posi-traction...two rubber lines all the way down the road.
I'm sure it was guys stopping to take a wizz.

And our new President would be proud of you... although he would rather that you used a 12 guage.

I had a strange one a couple of months ago, myself. My nearest neighbor is 1/2 mile away and my place sets about 250 feet back from the road. I generally leave the keys in my truck especially in winter; but since both pickups now have remote locks, the last thing that I do before going to bed is hit the lock button.
One morning I unlocked the truck, then walked out to get an armload of kindling. All of a sudden I heard a radio going... WTF? I almost headed back inside to get something except that it seemed to be coming from my truck... and if anybody was in that before I unlocked it, the alarm would have gone off. It turns out I had an electrical problem and when I unlocked the door the radio started playing... talk about a way to wake up!!!!

Years ago we had this great tom cat Reggie.
He was always doing the most amazing things. I got a new van and since we live in the country I left keys in it, window down.
I look out one night all lights were on it, horn blowing, etc. I run down and there's Reggie sitting in drivers seat, paws on steering wheel. The van had paddle switches and he had pushed them all.

Strange.
Guy who is into guns and concerned about home invasion, keeps a loaded sawed-off next to the bed. Happens to have a need for said gun on the exact same night he’s showing off the gun that he keeps loaded for home invasions.
...one of them self-fulfilling prophecies?
Similar to those firemen who...
well, maybe not, I’ve been known to be a bit cynical and not a great believer in coincidences.

Yea it really has us puzzled. One of those things that doesn't make sense. They said it was front door. All their bushes are 2ft tall so nowhere to hide. If I were him I would have looked out a window, or gone out back door with that gun telling wife "turn floodlights on one minute after I go out".
I understand reluctance calling 911 since it usually takes 30 min or more getting here.
Soon as I went out I had a clear view of their place although it's 800 ft away. Didn't see/hear anything.
As I was saying deputies if someone was up to no good they wouldn't talk loud and beat on door. (Some guys on drugs?)
Then thinking about it...if there was a confrontation and they're unarmed...I'm on someone else's property?

Eyah, that was one of my first thoughts while reading your first post. Whether things go south, or just a deputy who doesn't know you, it would take some explaining.

The county deputies here are super nice and I know some. I did not know the first one on the scene, however (and this I'm not trying to be political, but to me it so common sense)...I walked over to him, his spotlight on me, I said "I'm Mr. _____, I live here, held my rifle down, repeated "hello, I'm mr. _____, I live here, etc".
Common sense...the cop didn't know me. He was fine.
Like my wife said "why don't they teach kids in school how to respect and act with law enforcement?".

Strange sounds in the night. I'm sure many have experienced situations like this. I have a railroad - BNSF - passes my property about a mile to the west. Under certain weather conditions - sounds like they will be coming right thru the house. Drives my little spaniel absolutely nuts. Most irritating - it will wake me as I'm watching TV.

Seems to me, as a very distant observer, that something else is going on.

Thats definitely a learned trait from the parents. Grandsons mom is a meth head. Thankfully my son got full custody.

We are still reprogramming the grandson when it comes to the police. His younger half brother is worse.

I thought sawed off shotguns were illegal everywhere? Are they legal in your state?

MoKelly
Here in GA they have to have a minimum barrel length of 18 inches..sawed off a pump one myself that had the old worthless twist type choke..the barrel length is 18.5 inches...asked my law enforcement friend about it. Just to make sure, yep nothing wrong with that.

I agree with this also and I'm trying to figure it out. When something doesn't make logical sense there usually is something else going on.

My first take is that they simply reacted in an unexpected way. You never know how someone will react to a situation like that until it happens. Personally, I probably would have tried to see what was going on, to see who and where they were, and just sit tight with my shotgun and take a defensive position until help arrived, or if I felt it was all clear...and I probably would have called you somewhere along the way, especially if I decided to go out side.

Another scenario, is that they...or she...staged...or imagined the whole thing. We used to live in a duplex, and our neighbors were very strange indeed. She made up a story about a man in black coming in her house, grabbing her, hitting her on the head and leaving. He bought a revolver and wore it around like he was Hopalong Cassidy...along with a cowboy hat with a badge pinned to the front of it. But since you know the folks to be reputable, that is very unlikely. I think if I were you, I would be very circumspect until things start to make sense.
