I recall my Mom sending mail to her Mom (my grandmother) with just the Grandma's name, city and state. No street address or zip code. It always got there. But then it was a big family in a small MN town where nearly everyone was related and everyone knew everyone.

Not so long ago, there were no zip codes!
Zip codes began in 1963.
I was in Navy pilot training.....JFK was shot.

I remember when I was a kid, we just had a Rural Route number with no house number.

When I was young our address changed from the postal zone, New Orleans 21, LA. to New Orleans, LA 70121 when we lived in the outlying suburbs.

Since everyone's 9 digit zip code is different, I wonder if mail would be delivered right if you just put the longer zip code instead of a name and address.

How does Amazon's warehousing system work? I get that not every item is in every warehouse, but is it like Rock Auto where (for example) exhaust components are in Warehouse A, brakes in warehouse B, etc (or so it seems)?
I'm on the east coast and most of my orders tend to come from western states, you're in Calif. and you're getting orders shipped from Ohio.
Not sure how they work. But they are in the process of building two locations in Little Rock. One is a local shipping depot for the area.

The other building they are putting in next to my work is flipping huge!!!!! Supposed to have somewhere between 40 and 60 delivery bays. It's a regional shipping depot for the state.

From what I understand, they are supposed to have the majority of smaller items in stock.

An added bonus is they fixed and widened the road. At least you don't have to continuously swallow your kidneys due to all the pot holes and craters any more Not sure how long that will last though once they open up and the traffic increases 10 fold.

My old house on Long Island, the mailman knew our names and when I got married he saw the change and knocked one day to congratulate me.

My NJ mailman didn't even seem to know his own name and used to disperse our email across multiple mailboxes on the block. We used to all do mail swapping days until he finally got fired. It also seems he made off with some stuff.....

Growing up at my Dad's the mailman used to sit around the corner, drinking beers and reading people's mail. He finally got fired when one neighbor complained about open envelopes!

Current mailman in PA is great and is really good about getting stuff to us, even when marked incorrectly.

The kids ordered a Christmas smoked ham to be sent to the ranch yesterday. It never arrived and they searched everywhere. In the bushes behind the mailbox, out at the highway where the address is on a 4x4 post, down at other neighbors' homes along the easement. Turned out the delivery service declared 'no such address' so the vendor refunded. It was too late to order again so they ordered sliced ham from Safeway to replace it.

One of those three is about the first thing that I remember. The funeral was on our B&W TV so I asked what was going on and my mother answered that a great man had been killed.
Talk about a gross understatement...

I didn't have a street number until some time in the mid-late 80s, just an RFD# and road name.

According to Wikipedia, there's one in Nashua, N.H., but I've never received any shipments from there. The only warehouse in New England I've gotten anything from is Stoughton, Mass. Otherwise everything comes from 1000+ mi. away. :confused3:

I haven't been able to figure it out either, but that's what was explained when I did some contract work over there.

Amazon uses a series of facilities. The warehouses pull items and box up orders. Then will move through a series of sorting facilities that sort and load packages in to the totes that the delivery station will load in to vans for last mile delivery. Not sure what type of facility Nashua is.

Amazon is leasing/acquiring facilities at a rapid getting them operational at a rapid pace. My son is working maintenace at a pair of cross dock/sorting facilities (on same site) that are still in build out and have started operation.

Strikes me a bit odd dat ebay can send me email widin 20 minutes of Smash de carrier jammin sumting in my mailbox out at de road and provide dang near minute by minute track of where package traveled via Pitney Bowes. Post Office Informed delivery on other hand can't get information to my email in same day.

Pretty sure Pitney Bowes ain't got nobody runnin along behind mail truck so presumption is both PB & de PO working from same scanned bar code.

Almost seems situation is PO got a Don't Care attitude. Probably something to do with Union employees too dumb to back little truck up more den 50 feet. Dey got de power to make world like der work ethic and dey gonna show you dey got it. Probably ought to consider it a miracle dey feel like deliverin as much as dey do.

Sure seems like PO did a better job back when dey walked routes in surplus Army uniforms and drove brown trucks.
Maybe dey spent too much on dat TourDeFrance bicycle guy few years back and catchin up now.

Double post, you must be stuttering.
Almost seems situation is PO got a Don't Care attitude.
This sums it up. A few years ago the postmaster general didn't get his way, so implemented measures to ensure that their service was even worse.

It used to be internet purchases in WA were not sales taxed unless the business had a location in the state. You were supposed to track and report all purchases on your own from out of state sellers (few did). That all changed in 2018, we now pay sales tax on basically all internet purchases.

Seems all have been hit by porch pirates this month...

Home next door... owner was out back and got notification of delivery... went to porch and nothing... I said a guy just left porch and sped off driving older gold Ford Explorer with no rear plate...

Most if not all pirates here have no visible plate... too bad no plate doesn't warrant a stop... but it doesn't 99% of time and budget set to redirect 50% of $290 million police budget.

Lots of media coverage about neighborhoods setting up cameras to turn over to law enforcement which is what my street did but police don't want video so only function is to time stamp.

Some have taken to posting on next door which has also caused problems of profiling...

I did not have any deliveries but have garage code for immediate neighbors and put packages inside...

One FedEx guy was watching me but I said I'm putting in garage and was OK...

Thats to be expected. Here you pay personal property tax on anything with tires, if it's registered, and on mobile homes.

List includes, trailers, boats, atv's, lawn mowers, trailers, tractors, rv's, campers, mobile homes, auto's and trucks, farm equipment, and heavy equipment.

I dont know a single person that claims a lawn mower, atv, tractors, or farm equipment.

About the only ones that the state can enforce is anything registered and mobile homes since it's attached to your address.

They tried to do a tax on household items, and succeeded for a short time. A class action lawsuit shut that down.
