What Could Go Wrong Taking a 53 ft Semi illegally into the narrow residential streets of NYC?

We had a kid in my platoon who made residential oil deliveries with a twin screw tanker in NYC. Our Platoon Sergeant bet the Loadmaster a case of beer that the kid could back one of our semitrailer erector-launcher rigs into a C-141 on the first attempt. The kid won us the beer.

I used to have to back a full sized 18 wheeler, with a 40 ft trailer up the front ramp on a C-5.

That was always a good time.

Every time.

Anecdotes aside, I've always believed that if the average motorist like me had to pass the same test in our automobiles which a trucker takes to get his CDL there would be a lot less drivers on the road today.

And the streets would probably be a whole lot safer.

I think if police were allowed to tase people on the side of the road pulled over for texting and driving the world would be a better place.

I think the biggest issue is most people driving or not have absolutely no situational awareness. People walk around with blinders on like a horse towing a cart and they drive the same way, and then wonder how they get into accidents and then try to blame the other person. And throw in the Me First mentality and you have a problem in the works.

I watch some of those driving cam videos, and things that come to mind is they need to remove the horn from the vehicle, and people need to learn to ease up on the gas. In some of those videos you can actually see the cammer speed up to cause the accident or block somebody from coming into their lane.

The young woman in front of me this morning had her giant smart phone mounted on the dashboard, WATCHING A TV SHOW while commuting in to work. I could see the characters moving around from inside my car behind her. Needless to say she was swerving all over, and her speed was +/- 10mph on our rural 2-lane road. I had to do a little meditation to calm myself down; didn't get a chance to scold her.
