They forgot "Good Slections Flea Collar, Sell Cheap"

I recently watched an old Hill Street Blues episode (early 80s) where they raided a Chinese restaurant kitchen. A puzzled Belker holding empty collars while the dining room was packed with cops. Hilarious.

In the early 90s after China became a world player the demand for chicken feet & paws, as they are called, skyrocketed. Considered a delicacy in China and cooked in a variety of ways. We went from selling them to pet food companies for a few cents a pound up to $1 to exporters. Disgusting stuff.

Buffets here are, but with this covid we don't go, but will go to a cafeteria.
Some buffets are like a zoo, kids scooping up food, etc.

Not sure what you mean by cafeteria. Never heard of a cafeteria restaurant before.
For whatever reason, buffet restaurants (other than Chinese) don't seem to exist here in New England. I don't know if they're too expensive to run, or if no one wants to go there. The Chinese ones seem to do well. Not every entree is Chinese though...I've seen mac & cheese, fries and (not very good) pizza at "Chinese" buffets.
Can't think of any issues with ill-behaved children at any of the ones I've been to.

Most of the Chinese ones offer takeout only now, though there is one in Vt. that has a buffet with limited selection. I hope they reopen again...the wife and I enjoy going every now and then.

Then I called the health department. Lady said "I'll check it out and call you in a few days". I never heard back! So I called her. She stammered " uh...everything was ok...not to worry".
We drove by the restaurant...it was closed.

I put that solidly in the "urban myth" category. From what I've read, cat is pretty tough and stringy...you'd have to be really hungry to want to eat it. They do eat dog in the Orient though...

Saw a documentary of the Rat harvesting industry. Guy riding his bike with cages piled high with rats. At the end, some students are enjoying the rats on a sidewalk patio.

Meanwhile in Korea, a mother is lovingly preparing a dog dish for her children. Often the dogs are tortured prior to death to make the meat sweeter! No myths!

It's all about programming and belief systems.

I agree that a lot of the cat jokes probably fall into the urban myth category and frankly are racist....but one should never order the meow mein.

.

Like many schools or hospitals have. You take a tray, walk down the line and as you point they dip then hand the plate to you. Pay at the end of the serving line then find yourself a table. Often you bus your own table & tray as you leave.

Laugh if you will; I'll tell you a true story. Many years when I was working for the state, I was working a case where some individuals were running an illegal salvage operation. I was having lunch with a couple of the local county reps, at a restaurant they had chosen, and I assume inspected from time to time. As sometimes happened, our conversation jokingly turned to unconventional foods...like cats and dogs...served at unconventional restaurants. One of the participants said that he had actually eaten "cat" at a restaurant. When he said he was serious, I asked him how he knew they had it for sale, and he said "You just have to ask for the special menu". I didn't ask when or where, or even any more questions after that, but I truly believed him.

I thought that was for the live monkey brains. Saw a video of that once!

You mean sort of like a buffet except someone else serves you? Never seen that before. Seems an odd concept for a restaurant...of course that's the subject of this thread...

Saw that most restaurants in NYC can't pay their rent!

   / Odd restaurant policies?!? #94
Rent in NYC for a downtown restaurant could be over $50 a square foot! I knew deli's that cleared millions each year, but until recently, rents kept going up, putting them under stress, then enter covid and Deblasio as mayor from **** and , here we are.....
I saw a lot of smaller restaurants closing last year where I work in mid-town.

Was in town this morning. Over the years, the town is dying and vacant store fronts are increasing. This morning, two new eateries. Weird! City people seem to be buying up property like crazy. Maybe that opens up various markets and service businesses.

not so uncommon. been to several that do that, usually the choices are limited to what they are serving for the day.

Restaurant choices are always limited to what they are serving on a given day.

I never successfully ordered something they were out of or did not offer.

Here in Quebec, where I live, the Gov't health dep't has a web site that lists all infractions fines etc.
Problem is that the listings are only posted once proven in a court of law and usually that's about a year later with all the delays and worst if a sharp lawyer is used.

In other words the offenders have about a year to continue making U sick. (or worst).
AKA, not guilty until proven in a court of law.

Having perused that web site a few times I did notice that certain ethnic eateries displayed trends that made me want to avoid ever visiting them.
Guess different strokes for different folks.
