I'm not sure if it does or not, but I don't see how anybody can use these without wasting a wrist, shoulder, rib. hip or .....

I don't see 'safe' here at all.

it's got a grade 8 bolt as a sheer pin holding the auger on,
what more safety do you need :)

Personally wouldn't want to use one. I've seen several landscape contractors use them with 2 people many times.

Bunch of videos with people riding them.

I have one hanging in the garage.... it does work quite well actually. It helps to have a second person holding on.... Back in the day, I put 60 4x4 posts with one. Now that I have the tractor with a PHD, I wouldn't think of touching the HF one!

Well, my word to the wise is don't buy the HF multi size step drill sets and expect to drill anything but aluminum and plastic. They don't cut the mustard on mild steel. Instant dull. Total bust. They are cheap and cheaply made. Save yourself some grief and get the Irwin or DeWalt step drills. Much better.

Of course they aren't as cheap either but unlike the HF step drills, you can actually drill steel with them.

Drills, blades, etc. in general are all items I tend to avoid buying from HF.

I got the Earthquake model
Works great. Always have used it with 2 people.
I have made an extension for the auger and put 58 4x4 post in the lake bed. My tractor will not do that.
Lots of times it is just easier than to get the tractor out and attaching the 3 pt auger.
I have had mine 27 years with no problems, including issues with fuel or carburetor.

Won't buy either. Both are wrist busters.

Keep in mind however that the HF flavor comes with an auger. The Amazon flavot, the auger is extra.

good point
clearly HF compares to list price and personally I rarely buy at list price...

The only way you could hurt your wrist is trying to pull start it. It probably will never run anyways.

I guess it depends on the soil where you live. I bet it could be quite a "handful" if the auger caught on one of the many stones or roots we have here!

Mount it on your loader bucket.

^^ I wondered about that, or to one of those quick mount things.

Not fond of their grease guns. Or at least not fond of my ability to get their grease guns primed and pumping something besides air.

Why go thru all the trouble. If you have a tractor a pto auger is pretty cheap implement cost.

I have a 20 YO earthquake. IIRC there's a slip clutch so the motor won't stall if the auger does.

I've never tried to solo-muscle the 4" or 6" augers in our rocky soil. 10" ice auger, no prob, but all dirt holes are drilled 2-man. We do three rotations and lift to eject tailings, and rarely dig without the extension. Screw anchors usually don't 'screw in' for sour hen crap. We drill & drop, then back fill and water-in. Been doing that way for 25 yrs.

For a big job I'd rent a self-powered, towable drill-press-style auger. BTDT with both types, and the ergonomics of the the towable are superior. Buying a 3PH auger is a great way to be invited to do favors. ;)

So two pages and one tool so far. I can't wait to hear what's next. :D
