Good morning! Cold front blew in around 3am, no rain 65˚F with an angry wind, about 15mph.

Bird did you get any rain for your fertilizer?

I got the tomatoes out of the garden yesterday and was getting worn out then I check the temp - 96 with heat index of 101. I'll get the okra and bean out in cooler temps like this week.

Yikes Roy, tractorless and winter coming. How much would the tractor depreciate in 10 years, now 19 years old, almost a classic.

I still have another 13 hours on our JD before I do the 600 hour maintenance, all the oils and filters magically appeared on the workbench in the tractor barn. Joint ownership does have benefits.

Drew,

Good Morning!!!! 84F @ 5:00 AM. Abundant sunshine. High 99F. Winds NNW at 5 to 10 mph.
AQI 115 and 181, inside and out. Long about 3PM yesterday the northern part of the fire near Bucks Lake started really going to town, putting quite a thick blanket of smoke that the northwesterly winds carried right over the house. AQI took a huge hit, and around 10PM I got an evacuation notice via text and Facebook posts by the sheriff. Still here, watching the fire cams and satellite maps. There's also word of a relight much closer that is probably more of a concern. Didn't get but maybe a couple hours of sleep last night, and will be glad when the sun comes up. Lots of stars out, so at least I'm not still downwind of the smoke. That will let them get the spotter planes up as well as the borate bombers, hopefully to get this thing back under control. Still under a Red Flag Warning, winds are still strong farther up the mountain, and the power is still off, likely for most of today as well. Thank goodness for generator power and satellite internet.

The waiting really is the hardest part!

Hope everyone's week gets off to a better start than it has here...

supposed to be best fall color in years here peaks around second week of October
when I drive North from VA end of next week, will be going up 81 to PA turnpike and then heading East.
Am hoping the colors will be out and it will be a pretty drive
going this direction takes half an hour longer than going up 95, well worth it to me
Google Maps

I don’t like either route option, 81 is usually a rolling road block, 95 is an 80 mph demolition derby.

Not a drop of rain. I did do just a little bit of watering after spreading the fertilizer, then hoped for rain that didn't come. So I just went out this morning thinking about doing some more watering, but it's so windy that I wouldn't know where to put the sprinklers to get the water where I want it.

Real sorry you are still in this terrible situation.

Too funny, Ted.
I know what scrapple is, but there was a jersey diner that I almost always ordered it for breakfast. Fried with a nice crust.
As for the Pork Roll, we shared our meals generously with the dogs (after the company left of course), found it just OK, nothing special.
SPAM, that’s a local, in Hawaii favorite and we usually have a can or 2 in the pantry. Can even get it at Mickey D’s breakfast.

Oh yeah, SPAM is a staple, usually have a can of the different varieties in the pantry. One of my favorite ways to cook it is on the grill! I like it on a sandwich or as a side....

Interesting conversation;
I just finished a breakfast sandwich,
fried two slices of spam, two eggs and a slice of pepperjack cheese on two slices of multi-grain toast,
and now finishing my coffee before getting up and going good.

Good morning to all! Low of 40, we left the bedroom windows open last night.... got a bit chilly... The high for today will only be 61. Gradual warming back up to 80 by the end of the week. No rain....

Bacon, sausage, spam, pork roll, fried bologna, Canadian bacon ..... all good tasty stuff! The secret is moderation, maybe have one of them once a month or two.... I usually don't eat breakfast....

Ron, nice pic of your place... won't be long before those little hints of color are painted everywhere! The other pic reminds me of the movie "The Birds". We had the flocks of migratory birds passing through starting last week.

Rs, are you going to start charging admission to the "park and arboretum".... looking really nice. Your hard work is coming together....

Roy, congrats on the easy sale of the tractor.... hopefully you will be able to make someone else's sale easy.... hard to find good used tractors.

Rng, I hope you do not get caught in the path of one of the flare-ups. It sounds like you are well prepared, but still a scary situation to be in. Hopefully they can get them knocked down quickly!

Today's agenda is taking the grandson to school first off, then going to the neighbor to help him with his 50 hr service. Nothing else planned, but I'm sure something will crop up!

Everyone have a great day!

Good morning. It was 76° at 5 a.m. but .. dropped to 64° by 6 a.m. as the cool front passed by. We got a bit of rain about 5:30 a.m. but .. it didn't amount to much.

I did finally get two burn piles lit yesterday mid-day yesterday. I got delayed by one of our absentee neighbors .. who got his zero turn stuck .. then his pickup stuck .. trying to get his zero turn. This is the guy who shows up with his buddies .. they all get boozed up then start shooting, sometime well after midnight. This guy is the SIL of the gentleman who owned the property .. but died about 2 years ago.

I went over there first, with the Polaris Ranger and extracted his ZT. Then went back to get the N-H and a tow strap. I spent more time going back and forth than pulling out his truck. My parting "shot" was to remind him that their late night "shootemups" wakes up the guy that just bailed him out.

About 1 pm .. the wind dropped off enough to burn some brush.

I lit a second one about 3:30 pm.

Only five more piles .. to go.

Hope everyone has a great start to your week.

Prayers to all.

stuck
boozed up
shooting after midnight.
hmmmm, sounds like a Darwin prize about to be rewarded.

Rick, do you have any source of water near those burn piles? Looks pretty green there but nothing worse than a fireman
watching a fire go someplace you don't want it to...been there done that, super happy I had a charged garden hose stretched

doc visits and food shopping done. Bought some tofu for first time, going to cut it up on top of a salad and then try grilling it with curry to give it some flavor.
Texture/consistency is a little off putting...
Also got fresh ground turkey and after much label reading found some that didn't have "up to 10 percent added blah blah blah, which is usually salt and ?"
Worse is even with all the additives they get to label it all natural. Right.... Well cow poop is all natural too...

so nice out might go for a walk.
Rain coming in for next couple of days so need to get some exercise now.

they say Spam is one of the favorite "meats" in Hawaii, apparently WWII soldiers introduced it there and all the locals loved it.
I always thought it was disaster food you kept in the cupboard, stuff has long shelf life for sure
Infrequently Spam on the barbecue sounds pretty good, probably no worse than bacon which I adore and have sworn off of.
I do wonder what parts of the pig are used to make it. Snouts anyone?
I wonder if imitation bacon is worth buying...low salt fake bacon isn't likely to taste like the real stuff
As anyone in this fine state knows...Everything Goes Better With Bacon

Lou, I don't think you are going to be hungry any time soon... which if you are out in the fields is actually a good thing

Rick, those trees will start flaming and throwing embers with the strong North wind I'm sending you. Stand by.

Good morning all, 65 going up to 80 and cloudy - another sprinkle last night, not enough to soak the soil

Started stump removal for the Dying Norway spruce , down about 2 feet and it's still holding fast but moves a bit, should take one more try to get it. Maybe later this week after rains loosen it up.

Drilled the Oak Stump (sideways to meet up with top drilled) so it will burn inside a bit more, down a few inches already, so one more fire should do it.
Overseeded shady area, we will see how the fescue works there, lots of bare spots.

RNG - be safe and hope all goes ok!

Spam, Spam (always picture viking hats).

Stay safe and be well.

55°F and RAIN this morning, going up to 66° today.

Got home from work Friday evening to find a strange rooster walking around. Wife sent me a text about the time I was trying to corner it, telling me she'd already notified the neighbors down the road, and that they were coming to get it. Fair enough. I wasn't looking forward to seeing how good he was with his spurs.

Saturday, I got the trees I'd dropped last weekend picked up and moved to the burn pile. That work was broken up with intermittent honey-do popups, so it took longer than I'd planned. That postponed my plans to attack the weeds and grass growing wild along the hill by the road. So, that had to wait until Sunday, after I got back from a trip to Tractor Supply in Carlyle for chicken feed and a new poultry waterer.

20200926 Moving Trees.JPG 20200927 Frontyard Hill Grass.JPG

And then, miracles never cease, we actually got rain last night for the first time in a month. The rains arrived shortly after dark and fell light and steady through the night and into early morning. Man, did we ever need that.

Congrats on the tractor move, Roy. You are definitely going to love a cab with AC. Hope you can find something that suits your needs.

Great pictures, fellas.

Never liked Spam. Never had scrapple, but it sounds equally disgusting.

Burning shut down until these winds subside. Right now 16 mph .. gusting to 26 mph.

As a kid we used to make hog head sausage at grandpa's. Little bit of ear, little bit of snout, a little cheek, . . . . equally disgusting.

We always joked that SPAM was the meat from the Nauga. You know- the ones slaughtered to make all that 70s furniture and auto interiors from Naugahyde !
