Ventrac did a good job.
Yes, I would like to see a spider mower at work. How do you get it from point A to point B? I have an area at the end of my driveway that is too steep for the zeroturn. Would I walk it out the driveway, mowing as I go?
As to sickle bar, we had one of those years ago. My husband was always griping about having to repair it.

Hello NancyK,

Yes, you would walk along as you mow with spider mower which is a four wheel drive, self propelled and radio controlled and it also has a rope winch on board to enable it to climb and mow steep banks as the engine has a pressurized lubrication system.

In order to stay oriented with the machine you have the ability to spin it in a circle in its own length if you wish. when using the winch on a slope you have to reverse in the same direction you traveled forward but that is easy to manage with some practice as you simply move the joystick in the opposite direction.

When you watch their videos you will see the rope winch in use which is used to pull the mower up along with the four wheel drive system when rising vertically or when mows steep side hills which prevents it from sliding sideways or rolling over and falling down hill if the slope is wet.

They also have a small gas engine model being the X LINER too that does not employ a winch but if you are pressed for time you may not want a unit that small.

The spider mower has a range of 200 feet plus with the radio control system so you could follow it with you riding in the car or truck or on the riding lawn mower.

The folks at spidermowerUSA in Ocala, Florida would bring you a mower to test drive at no cost to you.

You would have to call the Smith Turf and Irrigation in Nashville to arrange a demonstration of Harper slope mower.

Look on youtube at the trailblazer TB one on the messicks channel. Since you already have a tractor with a fel this might work for you.

Trailblazer tb, interesting concept. From watching one video, looks like the company has more designing to do(to avoid scalping, for one thing). And when changing the angle of the cutter, even the guy moving it was a bit out of breath.

Nancy, I live in Greenback, between Lenoir City & Maryville.

I've got a 15' hydraulically powered flexwing mower. Since it's hydraulic, the wings COULD (but shouldn't) go vertical to 90 degrees and cut. I can also do essentially a 90 degree turn and not have to worry about binding anything.

I leave it on the tractor full time so the entire machine is my "big" lawn mower. I have come to appreciate the angles I can take it to. I'll take it down my (dead end) street and cut the sides of the roads and in some locations, it's riding up an embankment OR, angling DOWN an embankment. Only thing I really need to worry about is the rare oncoming car and or scalping something.

No rotating shafts to get caught up in however, the speed increaser and hydraulic pump get annoying to put on/off which is why I leave it on. They can get cumbersome.

And, to a point, I am not looking to save a dollar. I just do not want to purchase something then find it is not doing the intended job or is too hard to connect or maintain.

I may have missed it, but, how long is this section of driveway that needs mowed??

I was in the same dilemma, I had 1/8 of a mile of driveway that could turn over any type of mower, and I wanted a solution, before I got too old to take care of it.

I called a local guy, with an excavator,, he gave me an estimate, and three days later, the problem was GONE!!
I spent about $4,000, he did some other work while he was here ( a mile of trails, brush torn out of a 2 acre field )
so an exact number is just my best guess.

Anyways,,
This is the bumper sticker on the guys truck,, it says it all,, he does make dirt look good!!

His excavator has a 4 foot wide bucket, he can make a tracked loader look silly, he can move so much more dirt in an hour,,,

He even installed four new culverts, that replaced the two small ones that I had before.

I did the final grading with my landplane, and I planted the grass.

Now, there is no place that can turn over a mowing machine, unless you purposely drive into a culvert opening,,,

Maybe,, the best thing might be to make the mowing problem go away,, it is cheaper than maintaining equipment,,
and no chemicals are used!!

Sickle bars do work well but they are not particularly easy to mount. If you know the ground you are mowing constant repair should not be necessary. Mowing public roadsides blind is what causes problems for me - never know what is in the brush. But on my own road I have no trouble.

Consider planting to original tall grass prairie with flowers. Would make for nice view when flowers are blooming and a great wildlife habitat.
