Or maybe his wife was holding on to the load, so the driver could use both hands to drive. Much safer that way.

I think I've seen it before here also, but the thought that comes to mind is the damage done to the tractor and the cost to restore it ... again.

In my younger days, and a little stupid days, I tried to carry a 16 foot 6x6 in the back of my bronco. Thru back windows, over the seats and one end on the dash. Only going about 1/4 mile on dirt road. BUT I HIT A BUMP IN THE ROAD. The end on the dash bounced and took out the front glass. Expensive lesson. The next time, I went and got my trailer.

Once you got that darn windshield out of the way, you could haul long boards or posts much easier.

Had a two door passenger car with a long-ish rear package deck (between rear seats and back glass) and a wide dash. If I did it just right, I could get a 10' 1x4 or 1x6 inside and close the door/window. You had to put the rear in first, then flex the board to get the front end in after which it would level out over the seat with about a 1/2" to spare. Did it many times with no trouble. Then there was this one time where the 120" board was closer to 121".

With the 67 Fleetwood no problem bringing home 8' flourescent bulbs or full size trash can in the trunk...

Convertibles can be useful too and don't forget under slung for long items back when cars had real bumpers.

I loved my Willy Wagons. Excellent design for the very first SUV's! The front passenger seat folded twice to make a flat deck clear out to the end of the large tailgate. Or remove that seat, to fit something clear to the firewall. As a carpenter working in the inner city where I needed easy parking and locked storage to carry tools, that was a good design.

However - Both my first and second ones were so old that they weren't reliable. First owners of any 4x4 Willys Wagon sold them after they had accumulated rust and damage from offroading. For each of mine I ran out of patience after a year because I was spending more than an hour on repairs per each hour offroad. Wish I could have found a flawless one but they don't exist. The subsequent Wagoneer was day/night better.

I had the opposite of that for a while, a C5 convertible and a C6Z06. Finally sold both and got into Jeeps/Raptors as I realized that I couldn't seem to drive like a mature adult when behind the wheel of a fast car. Some of us don't grow up, we just get older. Nice looking cars you got there.

I don't do froo-froo cars that cost more than a decent house. My cars MUST work and haul stuff. Closest I got to a froo-froo car is my Sebring Convertible and I bought that five years old I've made it haul stuff too..

The median price of a home in California is nearly $550k, so that gives us a lot of wiggle room using your framework. My thing on play cars is that you need to be able to write a check for them and not have it put you in a financial bind. I buy them used, drive them for a year or two and sell them for about what I paid for them. We ate rice and beans for years to have no debt and to save a little money, and it was worth it. We each have our hobbies, and I bet I have spent less on mine than the average guy that golfs regularly.

I always find I don't mind paying for the cars/trucks nearly as much as the high priced insurance I have to carry on them.
