My brother sent me this picture of a small bird house that hangs on their porch...

quoted is what he asked...anyone have any ideas ?

This is a little bird house decor 6"by 6" on our patio. Whatever creature is using it has us baffled. Its some type of insect like a wasp or bee. We've never seen it only its mouth sealing the hole back up.
It's been there for months.

Not knowing locale makes it more difficult.

I'm guessing it put itself in a cocoon?

Sounds logical. Huge nest to fill a 6x6 box. How many of them little beggars ya reckon are in there???

Nothing like that here that I've saw.

We had paper wasp move into a metal roundish bird nest. The came and went through a short pipe entrance. Eventually covered the whole thing in paper. They weren't very good bird nest, never had any bird move in before the wasp did.

No sign of typical paper nest...he said the substance is gelatinous and the blacker stuff was like tar...the picture is deceptive for scale...it is not really a bird box...much smaller and meant as decor and not an actual bird house...

Any time that you get to play with fire or explosives, it's automatically a good day.
Even better is when you get to combine the two.

1/2 lb of tannerite in a refrigerator.

I had paper wasps take over one hanging bird nest. Took the little birds three days, the following year, to clean it out.

Years ago I had a mystery creature setting off my alarm at my shop. Besides my regular alarm on the back door, I had an alarm above the door that sensed movement in the yard. It would sound for 3 minutes then shut off. My air conditioning shop was closed for one month in December due to lack of business and mainly much needed time off.

My neighbor phoned me and said my alarm was going off every 15 minutes. I went to check it and could find nothing wrong. The next day he phoned back saying it was doing it again. I placed my game cam in the yard to see what it was. The next day he phoned again complaining. My game cam showed nothing. I started removing the alarm to restore peace in the neighborhood when paper wasps swarmed out of the junction box holding it giving me an unwanted greeting. They had been coming and going past the security eye setting off the alarm. One can of wasp spray ended their visits and a bottle of Benadryl gel helped relieve my multiple stings.

Had one of these last year. Mine was filled with bumble bees. I got stung up side the head and they hit like a sledgehammer.

Laugh if you will........ About eight years ago I had my first encounter with Bald Faced Hornets. I was out raking grass. One came out of nowhere - hit me so hard on the forehead - almost brought me to my knees. I don't think it was, so much, the force of the impact. It was that something so big, black & fast had just whacked me - dead center on the forehead. He wasn't out to sting me - he wanted to chew off a hunk of my hide.

Three days later I found the nest. Just a little bit bigger than a softball. It burned like a Super-Nova in the night sky.

Once again - I have a nest of BF Hornets. Out there somewhere. They have showed up at the hummingbird feeder about ten days ago. I AM on guard.

There was one year (1991) those white faced devils were bad in the woods. You would kick up a nest, and run into another trying to get away. Cruising timber we would put in a plot, measure the trees, go 660 feet and put in another plot; usually about 30 of those per day. One Friday a coworker got stun 7 times on the first plot... like a trooper he kept going but after about 6 more plots he found another nest and said ":censored: this, I'm going home."
That year another coworker was out renewing property lines. He blazed a hollow cedar tree; a hornet came out and stung him in the eye. They rushed him to the hospital in Bangor, as nobody knew what that would do.

I was hooking up my bush hog a few years ago and found that hornets had built a nest in the housing. I finished hooking it up, turned on the PTO... no more hornets nest.

Bald faced Hornets are flat out mean. I saw a nest in a tree next to an area I mowed. I thought of the ways I could dispose of the nest; in the end, I chose #7 1/2 12 ga. Quite gratifying.
