Building Lake Corona

Looks like my guess of 3 to 4 feet may be pretty close. I think this has been filled and drained 6 or 7 times since my last muck out. This much drainage on loose soil made for a lot of silt in.

Is all of this dirt coming from the loose soil from digging out the trees? This seems excessive and pretty much a deal breaker on having a pond if it keeps happening.

Lots of loose and exposed soil just from clearing. Factor that with about 7 or 8 rains in between draining the pond completely and it's not unexpected. With the pond being drained each time between rains the entire pond pasin is subject to erosion with every rain. Will not be the case once it fills with water.

Yep. Any silt that goes into the pond after it's full will gather at the upper end.

In my opinion, this has turned into a good thing.

I thought maybe you got some rain yesterday or day before?

We are brutally dry up here.

I agree. The slower than planned process will help in the long run getting rid of a lot of silt now and with compaction. The rain missed us. Getting really dry here as well. Grass is turning brown.

Where are you putting the silt?

Hybrid Bermuda (if it will grow that far north) is excellent for erosion control around ponds/dams.

Taking it all to the backside of the dam. Will look into the bermuda. Heavy rains this morning. Was really hoping to be working on the pond right now but we really needed the rain.

We received about this much. I need to get a new rain gauge. My last one sprung a leak.

Came down hard here a few times. Still had runoff into the pond when I snapped the pic. After tomorrow there is no rain in the forecast as far out as it goes.

Are you going to siphon drain it again?

Yes. Probably wait until tomorrow in case we get any more rain tonight. Should be able to start the siphon easily at the current water level. If I drain today and it doesn't fill as high as the current level with more rain tonight it will be tough to start due to how much the water will have to draw up the pond side.

/ Building Lake Corona #574
Yep. I'd wait.

Your neighbors that want/need rain should be paying you royalties for the rains you have caused there this Summer. :D

I'm wondering if they have figured out why they are getting so much runoff on dry days. lol.

In my rural area I'd be the talk of the coffee shop if I started a project like that. So the neighbors downstream would be joking about me having to drain my lake again......

That's why I don't go drink coffee with the local old guys each morning in the Community Center. My absence gives them someone to talk about. Which I'm sure is often.

Over the past two years we've built a new shop and a new house on our farm. Gravel road traffic increased dramatically with all the local noseys. :D

The pond is finally taking shape now and starting to actually look like it could be a pond. The dam is really close to being at the final waterline height. Probably have 3 feet to go. My chainsaw is in the shop so the remaining 4 or 5 trees inside the waterline will get removed as soon as I get it back.

This thread is great. And the pond is coming together nicely. It's always enjoyable to see a vision take shape. It also inspires a little equipment envy. I hired a guy to do some work with a CTL for me last month and my wife asked "how much does one of those cost?" Unfortunately I had to answer with "too much to sit in the barn most of the time". Kudos to all the participant for keeping this one uncluttered. All the sidebars and tangents have made sense. I'm gonna subscribe and follow along to see it finished..
