like I said there is lots of contradicting data out there whether you want to believe it or not...

AGAIN...every credible source that advocates wearing masks also state that distancing is a major factor in their effectiveness...even the mask zealots do not claim them to be foolproof...

See though, there really isn't contradicting data out there. You are just using that idea as an excuse to validate your feelings. If you cared enough to research the sources of claims in articles and other media, you can see where and why certain statements may appear to contradict. But take in enough data and research, and the basic facts are clearer. Also, this is a novel virus that we are all still learning about, so it's reasonable for findings and guidance to evolve over time. That doesn't discredit science.

Of course masks are not fool proof. That does not change the proven fact that they are effective at containing the spread of a virus.

I saw this and instantly thought of all the Mask Wearing Herds.

I would love to have that picture photoshopped to have everyone wearing a mask. lol

Two taboo subjects (the climate debate and the national elections of the last 16 years) taught us that both journalists and scientists are fundamentally biased depending on agendas...regardless of how much they claim not to be...

Gullible peeps tend to believe what is being yelled at them the loudest...

^^ I was thinking of having a couple of T-Shirts made up with this, front and back.

Shocker!

You mean they are not all joyfully going about and sharing their discoveries like Copernicus?

I read something about the Pandemic lockdowns are the expression of late-stage liberal cosmopolitanism, of the liberal technocrat's obsession with physical health and state control.

I think, that's just about right.

Geeze...!

Did you even read any of the thousands of data reports that are out there...NOBODY is saying masks are not SOMEWHAT effective...most analysis's use the words "can" and "may" be effective....

It's a fact that the COVID virus can be transmitted via ones eyes either by droplet contact or secondary means (touching with a hand etc)...masks are not virus magnets...if there are infected droplets around your mask they are also around your eyes and hands etc...
...If a mask stops infected droplets are they (droplets) not on the outside of the mask...are said masks not a risk to touch then?
I see people constantly touching their masks...lowering them to eat or drink etc...constantly touching them...

Masks are most efficient at keeping an infected person from spreading oral etc droplets....The problem is keeping infected people out of public places...

Your biased opinions are only that...like I said there is lots of contradicting data out there whether you want to believe it or not...
FYI...I've never told anyone not to wear a mask...all I've said is that there is scientific data out there that contradicts other scientific data...
I am not "spreading misinformation" but YOU are exaggerating what is proven and what is not...

AGAIN...every credible source that advocates wearing masks also state that distancing is a major factor in their effectiveness...even the mask zealots do not claim them to be foolproof...
/pine, your misunderstanding of science, how it works, and the difference between opinion, and proveable fact is alarming.

You claim I am biased and offering opinion. Please elaborate on my biases, when you don't even know me.

Further, please share these peer-reviewed journal articles that state the ineffectiveness of masks, and explain how they contradict other studies. As a scientist I am open to learning more.

If you are unable to do so, I think we can all assume you have no idea what you're talking about.

/ just when you thought you knew what stupid was #88
No, you are completely misunderstanding the principal benefit of wearing masks. This is sad that I have to explain this to you.

The primary benefit of wearing masks is that an infected person breathes outward through one, capturing the majority of their respiratory droplets on the inside of their mask, and keeping them out of the air that other people then breathe. Whether people touch their own mask doesn't matter. So you know, sure, dont go around touching other peoples masks. The majority of more recent research shows surface contact transmission is pretty minimal. As always, wash/sanitize your hands often and resist touching your own face.

The mask that YOU are wearing is not a virus magnet, like you say. In fact when you breathe in with a basic surgical mask, a lot of the air is going around the edges. But we should all wear them when close together, because you never know who is pre-symptomatic or asymptomatic. Assume everyone else has the virus.

Geeze...! ...Assume all you want...if you are such a learned scholar and scientist I shouldn't have to tell you how to query google with a search term like "how effective are the masks people are using"

BTW...I am not misunderstanding anything...especially science...a personal hero of mine (Richard Feynman) once said:
"Science is the belief in the ignorance of experts."

BTW if masks are protecting people from breathing in the virus...they are just as likely to infect themselves by touching the masks with their hands then their mouth, nose or eyes...DOH!

Explain to me? LoL...!
You obviously did not read all that I cited...otherwise you would realize you have only repeated what I have said prior (almost verbatim) ...

RSR, great posts and thank you for your work to spread actual knowledge. It is amazing how many folks actively try to avoid becoming educated, and prefer rather to stick with bias and assumption.

Yes RSR, thank you for your posts. You may have even swayed one or two out there but some may never admit it. I have lost a childhood friend and now a coworker due to virus related issues. My niece and nephew cannot begin school because their cavalier grandmother has the virus. Keep your distance, wear a mask, wash your hands. It is not going to kill you - uh, well, maybe it will.

You're not going to convince us and we're not going to convince you. Whoever us and you are.

That's the way of the world.

/pine, I am guilty of not wanting to read through all the drivel in earlier pages of this thread, so I didn't see you cite anything. All I was responding to was your continued recent posts spreading misinformation about mask use. You are still doing it and still don't seem to fully understand how they work. Masks MIGHT help you to not breathe in the virus yourself, but that is not the main reason we wear them. The virus probably doesn't live long on surfaces once your respiratory droplets dry up, so touching a used mask isn't even particularly dangerous unless it's still moist and you then directly jam your fingers into your eyes, nose or mouth. Surface contact is not the principal concern - breathing in someone else's exhalations is. Please try to get that into your head.

I haven't seen any misinformation. I've seen statements that there is no consensus and there is a wide variety of opinions.

/ just when you thought you knew what stupid was #96
Again, you are frankly wrong, and your spread of misinformation is damaging. <snip>
As I said earlier, I'd be happy to share with you scientific, peer-reviewed studies that demonstrate the science of how and why face coverings work.
Please do so.
Spread of disinformation:
"This will end by April"
"It will go away like a miracle"
"inject bleach"
"children are 'almost immune' to COVID-19"
is rampant and damaging.

:thumbsup::thumbsup:

I got news for you...YOU are the one stating lies and misinformation...

LMAO...are you scientist now too??...FYI...every time you exhale through a mask you are exhaling moisture droplets...just huff on a piece of glass if you don't believe me...

UGH this is insane how dense you are, bud. I'm an engineer who gets paid to experiment with internal combustion engines, not a medial professional or clinical researcher. But I am trained at researching and somewhat of a news junkie. I follow data and the scientific method. Don't accuse me of lying or spreading misinformation when you have nothing but conjecture and opinion to back it up. Your statements are frankly somewhat dangerous in a time when we need consensus to defeat this virus.

Diggin, that is the exact misinformation I am talking about. There is simply no scientific debate about whether masks are helpful and important or not. They are. If you think there isn't scientific agreement on that front, its because that's just what you want to believe is true, not because you researched it diligently to come to such a conclusion.

Just came from shoping in a nearby Rural Community. I am happy to report that out the the spotlight businesses are NOT complying with mask regulations.

You are nothing but a gullible zealot who obviously has poor reading comprehension skills...! DOH!
