Absolutely. If you think scientists are free to do as they please, report as they please, you are very mistaken. Pressure, money, politics and a host of other negative factors all figure heavily into the environment that scientists have to operate.

I think you guys are missing the bigger picture here per a sheriff deciding on what he wants to do...

We had this same kind of issue with local race tracks.

One track remained opened for races, and the county sheriff said he wasn't going to uphold the governors state mandate because he felt it was unconstitutional. The EXACT same sheriff is also the same guy who upheld the local county commissioners edict that there will be no demonstrations at the county courthouse where there was a confederate statue.

Anyway you cut it, the sheriff in the OP is a bonehead for his public proclamation.

I don't wear a mask for myself, I wear one for others.

No...the problem is that many peeps that know they have been exposed but don't have symptoms (and don't bother getting tested) still go out in public without isolating themselves after the exposure...
With the current state of testing in many areas one may have to isolate for two weeks after EVERY exposure/test before the results came back, and many of the tests are not accurate.
Yes, that behavior is inexcusable.

However, asymptomatic spread, and the delay between the time you can spread the virus versus when you show symptoms is still a very significant problem as well, and is why masks are critical.
Yup. Also just keep away from people as much as possible.

I agree! Let them go without a mask. Nature will look after the rest.
As a senior w/ some other conditions I agree with that as long as I and people I care for don't get it.

You know this ... as a scientist?

I am actually, a scientist, and that is completely wrong. That is precisely why safeguards such as tenure at Universities, and rigorous peer review to receive grants, and then publish results, are in place.

Can bad apples abuse the system and still find loopholes? Sure? Does it happen? Yes, in very rare and isolated cases, and when it does, there are very severe and harsh repercussions. How many other jobs can you, and will you, be fired from, and never be able to find work again in the field in your lifetime, because you tried to mislead someone?

Is there pressure to perform? Yes, just like any job. The difference is ethics, integrity, and performing "good, evidence based, hypothesis driven science" is the standard by which scientists are measured. If you can't/don't/won't do that, you won't even last through graduate school, let alone develop any sort of career where you are successful.

Are politics involved? Not in the least bit.

Are there pressures for money? That's just downright laughable. Any researcher knows they could go into industry and make at least 50% more. Scientists aren't in it for the money. They're in it for the pure joy of scientific discovery.

Scientific investigation is actually free from so many of the constraints and pressures of modern industry/business that lead to unscrupulous behavior.

Tell that to scientists that are NOT mainstream and have "other" ideas.

LEADERS, political, religeous, industrial have no interest in truth or facts, never did have. Only give information to the masses (sheep) that will net the desired result. ****** mentioned to Mousilini how fortunate for Leaders, that the people do not think.

I don't get that current thinking either. So, maybe I had this in the fall and am a carrier. What good is isolating myself for two weeks gonna do?

No to make light of it. More to make a point. I "PERSONALLY" don't think the world is flat, but also "PERSONALLY" have no way of knowing that it's not. MUCH, and I stress MUCH, that was common belief and accepted as fact, has been overturned. Maybe I'm like Sleepy Joe. What did he say? "We choose Truth Over Facts"

As far as scientists go. That is about the LAST group of people I would believe based mostly on that whole system in which they operate.

Here... watch this, do an experiment in your backyard, and you'll be good to go...

Maybe a joke, but a flat earth website is reported to have said they had members from "all around the globe."

When it comes time for medical personnel to triage the infected, the mask wearers should go to the front of the line and people like this sheriff should go to the back.

I gotta say in all honesty. There is more that I have seen on the Internet, to "suggest" the earth is in fact FLAT, than the other way around.

HEY, if we do in fact live in a computer generated Hologram, it's a moot point! :)

Well, now we're delving into semantics, but I certainly don't consider those "scientists." You're absolutely right, they may have entirely different motivations.

That's why if the public wants to understand if masks are effective, they should look to the actual scientists doing the research, as opposed to politicians (e.g., the sheriff in the article).

As I said earlier, you won't find a single aerosol scientist that says you shouldn't wear a mask. It protects others, and recent peer-reviewed published work shows that cloth face coverings also provide the wearer some protection, which is better than nothing.

Masks are a very poor substitute for what is really needed...and that is a cheap (free to everyone) highly accurate test that has instantaneous results and can be used daily by individuals at home...mass produced and bulk quantities sent and distributed freely to every US household...

Where is the profit in that?

Tests only tell you if you have it or not.
Masks are a prevention.
Both are needed.

You forgot the Ferengi. Never forget the Ferengi when discussing profit.

I wonder how they managed to take the measurements at the same time 4000 kilometers apart? They would need a fairly accurate clock that isn't dependent on the sun, I would think.

Agree. Masks have been protecting OR medical people and patients for eons. They work.

Ralph
And what do you profess the percentage of the masks currently being worn by every day citizens being N95 quality or better ??
Masks are largely just symbolic baby blankets...they make peeps feel like they are doing something...I bet a lot of the idiots that know they have been exposed even wear masks when they go to the grocery store...!

Before the COVID crap masks in hospitals were mostly worn to protect the patients...the insurance companies required them in specific scenarios...there were too many peeps getting sick when they went to the hospital for unrelated procedures etc...

Unfortunately, that is not true. Masks/face coverings DO protect both the wearer and the people they come into contact with. I'm happy to share peer-reviewed journal articles that prove this. They don't provide 100% protection (even N95's don't do that) but they do block a significant portion of virus-laden droplets being both exhaled (infecting others) and inhaled (infecting you) thereby significantly reducing infection risk.

Their efficacy is dependent upon the material used and how well it fits/seals around the face. But, a poorly-fitting, poorly-constructed face covering still provides a measurable amount of protection over wearing nothing.
