Must have been the wrong manual. It definitely has a chain drive, and the manual specifically specs two different lubes.

I've been running 80-90 in my tillers for many many years, I've never had even one problem...

I've got aprox 2,000 acres on one of my tillers, that should be a good enough test!!

As stated, 00 is specified in the Landpride tillers because 80W-90 will not consistently stay in the chain case over the long haul.
YMMV and apparently yours does.

Gosh, on exposed chain anything 'greasy' is better than nothing.

Motorcycle chain oil being best as it is designed to reject dirt and not fling but all being said any lube will save the chain.
What U don't want is rust that will bind the links and cause the gear teeth to wear out prematurely.

There's two kinds of motorcycle chain lube- dirt and street. Street chain lube is sticky so it won't get flung off at high speed. Dirt chain lube is less sticky since chain speeds are lower and sticky lube will attract dirt which wears the chain and sprockets.

That is pretty obvious. The 12 series are a low rent tiller with a name brand decal.
I've never seen one up close, so I had no idea... I guess I assumed all of them were sealed up good enough to use 80-90...
