Front tire of a Saber by John Deere, 42" 16hp lawn mower!

A little background... top off with air the tire about two weeks prior. We came up to the farm, the front tire was still good, not over inflated but needed to top off a rear tire. Wife cut the grass for a couple of hours and I was done with the stuff I needed to get done a few hours after that. As I walk by the lawn mower, I noticed the front tire, it was a bit overinflated since the sidewall cracks were really pronounce. Thought to myself, that's odd!!! Didn't think twice so had a good time with friends that night.

We all went to bed 11-ish and one guy that stayed in our camper wondered what the explosion was all about at 12:22 am. Woke him and his dog up, we all thought he was nuts until I went out the basement door and saw some green slime on my tractor (had no idea at the time Wft is this....) Anybody else seen this?? Only thing we could think of is that the Slime in the tire started to ferment!!! Slime was put into the tires, 10 years ago or so??? And yes, way more Slime than it called for (maybe 24 oz???) Blew a heck of a hole in the tire....

Slime went every....

Sprayed on the underside of deck and managed to get between the boards... (clamp to lift tire to change tire...)

Happy it would clean up with water!!! Now about a few weeks later the other tire is growing in size... (I moved it away from the house...)

Maybe a lesson learned...
When a tire is cracked its time to replace it.

Years ago some friends and I drove about 80 miles to go dirk bike riding at a track. We took two vehicles, one was a Civic pulling a small trailer with two bikes on it. The trailer has those very small tires on it. About an hour after we had been riding we stopped for lunch. While at the vehicles one of the trailer tires blew apart like that out of the blue. The tires seamed like they were in good shape, maybe 2 years old or so. I'm not sure if I would have believed it if I wasn't there.

I've never seen/had a tire blow. A friend worked for Sea Land - Anchorage. They had a split rim semi tire blow. No slime but the split rim ring wiped out half of the tire repair shop. Several scared men - nobody hurt. I have slime in one front tire on my JD riding mower. But it is always stored in the carport - out of the sun. It's been in that tire for six years now and I've never seen it "balloon" up.

It’s really shocking. Especially when you’re traveling 20MPH with 2 round bales on the loader across a field.
Sounds like a shotgun blast on steroids

I was surprised the Slime looked that good after 10 years .

It’s hilarious. Reminds me of Ghostbusters from the 80s ;).

I can understand. The excessively loud bang and then trying to control the situation. In the case of the semi truck tire blowing its split rim ring - they didn't have what he called a "safety cage". A "safety cage" - something to contain all the bits & pieces when/if this happens - ???

He said OSHA became involved in this also. I think the final solution was to take those few "split ring" tires to a local tire repair store. Like Les Schwab.

I was very impress at how well the tire held together. It didn't split the sidewall at all. Could easily have gone another 10 years on those tires.

So, the "new" tires are most likely older than the "originals"!!!! :D :D (oh, and they will need some slime too :banghead: )

The other front tire is Growing - I moved it away from the house...

Cracked tires are a sign "I need replacement". I never load the tires to whatever max is on the tire. Makes the ride to rough.

Neighbor kaboomed one of the large rears on his large Case while baling. He was on a pretty good slope too but somehow didn't roll it.

Slime is amazing stuff. But not a replacement for a new tire when one is warranted.

I gave a gallon to my buddy who cannot afford new tires for his old four wheeler. But he will not drive it hard or far unless he is with another person.

Glad no one was hurt or had a brown out in their shorts.

cracking is the sign that the rubber is disintegrating. cheap imported tires don't use the necessary proper rubber and methods to make the tire last. made in USA Carlisle tires that I have are 20 years old, and are like new!..

My father-in-law gave me a home-made trailer made the 1950s that is awesome. Dual axles that look like they belong on a semi. 20 years ago I had American made ST rated white-wall tires installed and have always kept them covered. last year I decided to overhaul it, media blasting and power coating everything including the wheels. so, the tires had to come off.. they still looked brand new.
When I got the wheels back I took them with the tires to get them remounted and balanced. SURPRISE!!! the tire shop here in the Democrap Republik of Crudafonia said the state prohibited them from mounting tires more than 10 years old but would be happy to sell me 5 new ones. (they are NOT cheap)
so, I found a used tire machine for sale... $75 bux and will all the trimmings.. Funny how that same shop had no problem balancing them :)

Liability concerns maybe? If i had a tire shop I'd probably be reluctant to remount 60+ year old tires too. Balancing, different story.
Good deal on the tire machine. Paid for itself first use.

It's not just California. Our tire shops won't work on tires over 6 or 8 years old, I forget exactly how old. Also, they won't repair a tire that had damage outside the edge of the tread. I hope you don't use that trailer on the road. I will use tires as old as 10 years because I keep everything inside, but I have had an older tire, that looked new, explode while stored in the garage, not even on a vehicle. After that happened, I took the age of the tire more seriously.

Back in the 70's, I had one of the infamous Firestone 721 tires blow while going down the freeway in Phoenix. Tire disintegrated and blew the front fender clean off of a '77 Chrysler Cordoba. That, along with how Firestone treated us after the event, is why I never have, or ever will buy another Firestone tire. We finally got paid for all the damage to the car (new car), but it took years.

I also once had an old tire leaning up against the outside wall of my shop blow the tread off. It was mounted on a rim and had air in it (obviously), but it hadn't been used in a long time. Just sitting there, with other tires leaning against it in a row. BOOM! Was loud as heck, and I was in the shop on the other side of the wall.
