Big screwdriver through the filter & twist it off. I always put a bit of clean grease or oil on the gasket before installing.

After reading all he horror stories, I THOUGHT I was "prepared" for the 50 hr HST change... WOW, was that sucker tight. I huffed and puffed with a channel lock tool for a bout 15 minutes before I pulled out the hammer and chisel. As I laid there wondering where to "hit," I found a nice lug on the base that gave me a direct shot. A few taps and it moved, simple from there...
BUT, question?
Is the replacement filter supposed to be that TIGHT? As best I could tell from the "hyroglyphics" on the filter (and other references), lube ring then tighted about 1/2 to 1 turn after contact. I did this by hand basically as tight as I could WITH my hands (no wrench). No leaks, all seems fine. How "tight" is reasonable besides as tight as I could make it WITHOUT a wrench.
For the heck of it (and since I bought the xmission filter by mistake), I changed both filters. The other filter came off easily. I lost more fluid on that filter than the HST, but my pan only collected about a gallon, so I put a gallon of new in. The xmixxion filter had an accumulation of metal on the magnetic ring. There was nothing noted on the high pressure filter. HATE to find ANY metal, but I guess that is what the rings and filters are for. I am GLAD that I changed BOTH filters. For ME, there is a LOT invested in this machine!

(L3240HST wit LA724, HD blade, and "rebuilt" BMB six foot pull type brush cutter that purrs like a kitten and chops ANYTHING!)

Same issue here. Did the 50hr service on my GL3240 yesterday. The HST filter was a BEAR. I ended up taking a screw driver and hammer and also tapped on the lugged ring at the filter base to break it loose. Once loose the regular filter wrench got it off. I kind of wonder if Kubota has a special tool that engages the lugs? I know most filters have a raised area on them for grip but the hydro filter is completely smooth other than the lugged area at the base of it. That was by far the hardest part of the 50hr service.

I pinched off the vent line on the hydro and I only lost less than 2 quarts on both filters combined. I lost more fluid on the hyrdaulic suction filter than the hydro one as you did.

Well, I guess I put my HST filter on a bit too tight on my last change because it is stuck on there real good.

Any tricks or tips?
My next step will be to get one of the filter wrenches with the jaws that lock into the notches on the filter base I guess.

Or take a shot at it?:shocked:


June 2020 - L4600HST with same problem...

For me what got the stuck filter off:

  • Even after buying the jaws of life filter wrench with the gripping cleats on it and applying my entire lard butt force to it, no dice.
  • Took a masonry chisel to the notched edge on the flat side of the filter and tried to get some turn by tapping with a 16oz hammer.... just tore through the cheap metal edge on the filter (no damage to mount point or anything... got as aggressive as I could).
  • Finally, tapped every square inch that I could reach of that hard ridge on the flat side of the filter with 16oz hammer, said a prayer and another reef on the filter pliers and it came off.

Also, I only lost about a quart of oil between both filter changes by using a shop vac and having someone apply suction to the oil port (where you add oil) on the back of the tractor. As soon as oil starts coming out around the filter as you loosen it, trusty assistant forms seal on oil port and air starts sucking back through the filter mount hole... very little oil lost. I'm a newb and posted a much longer text description with a youtube link ... no links until you're 3 posts old... so the post was rejected - search youtube for Kubota B2650: HST Filters for a nice video of this process (that's not me).

p.s. I didn't even bother buying the cap filter wrench. Kubota genius decided to make them completely smooth on the top. (currently using Kubota branded filters - that and the UDT2 hydraulic oil are about the only thing Kubota soaks me for).

On the first service & removal of oil or hydraulic filters( 50 hour or whatever ) - They may have been installed at the factory by a 900# gorilla.

ALSO - look closely. The entire undercarriage AND filters were painted, as a single unit. Take a box cutter and run it around the base of the filter and break that paint bond. Break that paint bond - a good filter wrench will finish the job.

An air chizzle takes of stuck filters pretty good. Chizzle it around in a circle. The screen driver through the filter never works for me.

I had a terrible time getting the filter off my M59. A regular filter wrench was a no go. Channel locks on the filter were a no go. There wasn’t enough room for a pipe wrench. I tried the wrapping a strap around it trick and busted the strap. Then I got my SDS cordless hammer with a chisel and spun it off in 20 seconds. The air chisels also work good for removing thread on fan clutches.

I’ve got a cordless SDS drill and a corded SDS max. They’re easily on my top 5 list of game changer tools. Drilling holes in concrete is way faster and quieter compared to the old style regular hammer drills and they’re pretty useful as hammers. The SDS is the bomb for taking up tile and apparently removing oil filters. You won’t be breaking up sidewalks with the max but it’s a pretty effective demolition hammer.

I caught **** with my first one at the first 50 hours service. I ended up using a huge pipe wrench to break it loose. I always smear grease on the seal when I put a filter on.
When I did my 400 hour service, it came right off!

I've had this issue with an RTV, two tractors and and SVL all of which are Kubota. I own all the wrenches and yet have still had to do the screw driver thing. Then one day I was trying to remove one off my track loader and was just about to drive a screwdriver through it when it hit me. Wait for it. Wait for it. I then loosened the coupling on the hydraulic line going to the filter holder and as soon as the pressure was released I could unscrew the filter by hand.

Good thinking. I’m learning.

Couldn’t attach my 4 in 1 with the flat faced couplers again. In my case I try to do it in the morning. Maybe because the pressure leaks down or maybe the fluid cools and loses volume?

I often will run a water hose over the lines and the attachment and sometimes that works. As for the 4-in-1, make sure you always close the bucket tight. if there is a gap, gravity will add pressure to the lines after it's detached.

I operate all the valves with the engine off. That should bleed off any pressure in the lines. The attachments need to be in a relaxed state though. (On the ground or supported.)

Poke a good size screw driver straight through it and spin it off
abit messy but but it usually gets the stubborn one's off.

I did the screwdriver trick to my brothers car once. Didn稚 work and then couldn稚 drive. 2 days of hacking with chisels and screwdriver blades finally did it.

The screw driver trick is great, if it works. If not, you are dead in the water.

Good luck. BTW. I own 2-3 filter wrenches and then bought the universal kit from hf. I had 7 different filter wrenches. Not one fit any of the 7 kubota oil filters I replaced. Thank goodness my buddy had an old leather strap filter wrench. Old school!

They must do that on purpose?
