my point is people should have been better prepared

It's not just people, it's business, stores, distributors, hospitals, county government, state government, federal government. Everyone is skating too close to the edge. Saving too little, spending too much, living too high. I don't even know if this will change anyone's mind.

Humans seldom change our mind/ways of acting when the safety net is in place. This is the first time in my 69 years to fully realize I really might be dead in the next 30-90 days. I had that talk with our daughter last night. It was hard for both of us.

However I have not cancelled my 110th birthday bash. If I missed it it would embarrass me to death. :)

^^^^^

Can you cite your source? As Abraham Lincoln famously said

I think there have been several reports about survival after intubation/ventilator became necessary. The number I recall is 85% mortality in those requiring ventilation in the Chinese experience. Not unexpected and probably not much worse than for other serious pneumonia in a high risk population.

I tend to disagree. In life things happen. People get injured, lose jobs, etc. I don’t think it is the government’s job to bail people out in bad times. People should have savings for that. There is a saying that when the tide goes out you can tell who was skinny dipping. Many people live beyond on their means with no savings whatsoever. I am not talking about people in poverty I am talking about people with six figure jobs, new cars, boats, Mc mansions, latest gadgets, eating at restaurants every night, etc and every bit of it is financed. I find it hard to feel sorry for them for not having an emergency fund.

I never envisioned this pandemic happening but I have always saved because I knew something would someday happen. Financially it isn’t great but unless this drags on for years I will be ok.

I have Dad and Grandma to thank... both made the Great Depression very real to a impressionable kid.

Grandma would point at homes people lost and many she would say had been living high off the hog and heavy in the stock market. Her entire life except for a modest mortgage she paid cash/check.

Dad was working as a kid delivering the Tribune and odd jobs starting age 8 and turned over what he earned.

One of the Docs is on ventilator... he was on a ski vacation previously... Did not have any cases here so may have dodged a bullet...

About the ventilators, apparently you need doctors and technicians who are trained to operate them.

That story is enough to bring one to tears. Thanks

This event may be the first one since WW2 where everyone knows someone that has a high risk of dying. This country was not built on high tech tools and we know there are not enough high tech tools to save all of us short term. It is awesome what some people have been doing for years like these helmets for 4 years now with hospital usage.

It varies a lot... the old iron lung wasn't so complicated but if using an anesthesia machine they are designed to be used in the presence of anesthesiologist... others fall somewhere in between.

Actually there are some patients who would likely do fine with CPAP or BPAP so every patient that does ok with one of those devices frees up a ventilator for someone else.

There is a big difference between a passive breathing machine (PAP) and a forced breathing machine like a ventilator.

"A machine pushes air and oxygen through the mask, and the pressure of the air helps you breathe. ... CPAP or BiPAP might be considered if you need help breathing. A ventilator might be considered if your breathing problems are more severe. A ventilator is used to breathe for you when you can't breathe on your own."

I know that when I am all stuffed up nasally from my seasonal allergies, My CPAP sure helps me breathe. Just a few minutes on the machine and I can breathe easy again. I would not discount the benefits of a CPAP or BPAP.
