How can your Dr. issue those instructions when that drug hasn't even been tested vs. COVID-19?

Little can be done for off label use when the drug has a legitimate use...

The Dr. can prescribe a drug that has been around for decades anytime he wants. Doesn't mean it is efficacious for Covid-19 but that is up to the Dr and the patient to decide if they want to risk it. Like the prez sez.. "what has a sick person got to lose" by trying this drug combo. It is not likely to hurt them, it may or may not help them. The French seemed to think it helped.

I am also wondering why we are not trying to sterilize N95 masks? Instead of throwing away after each patient encounter can we throw away the mask at the end of the shift? can we spray some disenfectant on the mask after each encounter? Or maybe UV light exposure for a few seconds? Would this help the shortage?

Because it is not easy to do, and it can damage or destroy the filter media's effectiveness, even if the respirator appears undamaged visually.

Shades of grey...

Poster could have said he was planning a trip to a part of the world with Malaria?

Not all script is written for immediate maladies... an example would be Anaphylaxis kits.

A Doctor writes a prescription which is filled and may never be used... and when used it might not even be the prescribed using it... back in Scouts the Scout Master carried one Anaphylaxis kit should one of the scouts have a severe allergic reaction... could be a bee sting.

One of Dads old friends owned a large cattle ranch... don't know how the subject came up but he said the Feed Store has all the basics... antibiotics and such... of course for farm animals.

I can see where it might be more of an ethics question if it was billed to insurance...

Perhaps the Dr. got his instructions from the French?

I read this morning that NY's essential businesses also include any one which is owned and operated by a single individual is exempt from the shut down,
and that also liquor stores are an essential business, like to know what idiot is dreaming up these exceptions.
Went past the strip where there are several liquor stores. The parking lots were packed to overflowing with people parked out on the street.

I got my motor carrier exemption letter yesterday to cover me if I get stopped in an area under lockdown or under curfew. Got a copy in the glove box of both my service truck and personal vehicle. Doubt I would get stopped in my company truck. But there's a chance if I'm in my personal truck and have to go in early.

I don't see why you guys are questioning the proscribing of a well known drug we have used for other things for decades and it may or may not work for Covid-19. Why would Dr's NOT want to write the script, and WHY should patients that are ill not want to take it? I don't see where you are coming from.

As a country and as Americans we're monitoring, adapting, reacting and sacrificing as us Americans do! Our first responders are reporting, our factories and corporations are responding with increasing production for necessary material and goods and our people are rising to the calling their country asks of them! Don't for a minute believe anything different.

These are hard and difficult times for sure. Is our system perfect? No. But we're a resourceful people that when called upon rise to the challenge. We'll meet this challenge. We'll beat this challenge. And then we'll move on, ever stronger from our hardship. It's what the generations before us did and it's the values they instilled upon us.

Quit whining and start winning!

Hospital Directive yesterday said all medical staff should carry their hospital ID at all times instead of say leaving it in your work locker.

The reason being is you might need it when traveling to and from work and having it in your locker won't do any good.

Nurses are being offered on the spot employment in SF... something that typically takes months to even half a year.

The offer is conditioned on license check and testing... with a talked about 5 day turnaround...

14,000 nurses are 8 weeks from completing Nursing School... these would be fresh grad RN's Problem is all the nursing schools have been shuttered along with all the other schools.

Fresh Grad Nurses have a lot to learn... some say they are book smart but it typically takes a couple of years on the job to be proficient... that said, we have hire some phenomenal new grad nurses that got it... quick to learn and excellent clinical skills...

22 years ago our current Director of Nursing was a new grad we hired... worked all aspects of nursing and was also lured away by a competitor... but we got him back and he is the type of nurse I would want in charge if I was having surgery... also made the transition from having those superior to him now under him... and it works very well.

Talent tends to rise one way or another.

Push comes to shove and Martial Law is declared, it will work just fine actually. I can that being the end game far as controlling the spread. Voluntary controls in this society may work but not likely. Going to end up with the old 'hammer down' philosophy.
People gotta be smart with there social distancing. Wife and I had to stop by Walgreens today. Lady came out of the bathroom holding a tissue to her runny nose. She then proceeds to start talking to my wife. Lady was a close talker

wife was trying to be polite and point out that social distancing was at a minimum of 6 ft. Lady didn't get it. I finally asked the lady to back up and give us some space.

Lady was one of those people that would fo around spreading it to everyone she encountered acting like that.

.............because some drugs can do more harm than good if you don't follow approved recommendations. This reminds me of....the blind leading the blind.

That's a good point. If the drug turns out to be effective it could be a game-changer!

Well, I think we will leave it to the Dr's and the patients not us internet warriors.

2nd on that!

I don't always "trust" doctors just because they are Drs. (After all, half of them graduated in the lower 50% of their class)

But, Quinine (etc is a well know substance. I think they could get that close.

The current coronavirus pandemic will end. The only question is how. There are four possible ways:

1. Coronavirus proves to be seasonal
2. Herd immunity
3. A vaccine
4. Therapeutic drugs

So this is worse than SARS, Ebola, Swine Flu, Hanta, etc because it's more contagious, AND because it's less survivable? :scratchchin:

Those with symptoms or possible exposure can be tested but the rest of us shouldn't rush, and might we read much into possibilities while admitting it's too soon to guess? btw, case numbers vs %s can be so misleading. You know I can be, too. ;)

That is the FDA's job. Maybe let them do it instead of taking the word of a reality show host?
