A good explainer of the current state of play and where things stand, in terms of the public health perspective:

As of March 14 at 8:00 a.m., the state of North Carolina has a total of 680 public (i.e., non-commercial) #coronavirus test kits.

So the big question is, “Why don’t we have more tests?”

Here’s the situation:

Here's an interesting NYT article with a chart you can manipulate. Essentially it shows that earliest possible intervention flattens the spike of near-simultaneous cases that will over-run any health care system such as is happening in Italy now where people are dying of neglect in the chaos.

The most important intervention measure mentioned is extreme social isolation, closing events and schools, working from home.

Paywall but I discovered its free to read if you give them an email they can spam, they claim 'check here' will avoid that spam. I'll see ...

Static picture of the chart. In the article, moving intervention (yellow) earlier (to the left) shows a flatter curve the earlier you go.

How Much Worse the Coronavirus Could Get, in Charts

That is a bloody good, interactive, chart!

Our PM came on TV (again, almost daily 'briefings') and explained what we (Aus) are doing, using a similar chart. He was flanked by one of the Health Experts advising the government.

We're going to take a huge hit, financially, in the tourist/foreign student/overseas work visa area... As of midnight tonight, ALL people arriving in Aus are to self-quarantine for a fortnight. No non-essential gathering of 500+ people. Heaps more regarding interaction with other people. No cruise ships can dock for the next month.

Schools & universities are not to be closed. That could change, of course... it's probably only a matter of time.

It's all designed to slow the onset of this virus so that our medical system is not overwhelmed.

ANZAC Day, the big and emotional Veterans Parade & Ceremony is coming upon 25th April... we'll see what the contingency plan will be for that.

Thanks. I think the drastic measures illustrated in the chart will become necessary worldwide.

And I think the world economy is going to take a big hit, as you described, bigger than is reflected in present stock prices.

I think that may well turn out to be the case ... as it dawns on the market what the longer term ramifications could potentially be.

Still too much unknown about the virus ... that's why you see the degree of caution you do from professionals like Fauci, during his testimony.

Doubtless that will make those looking for "happy talk" unhappy.

Have a pretty good friend who is a funeral director and like he says... We always get you in the end...:D
That sounds like a welcome pitch at the penitentiary? Weinstein is ready... he's already bending over and deservingly so.

They send you junk because you aren稚 willing to pay the price it would cost to manufacture locally.
And more to the point, the specifications we provide allow for the quality we accept. The Chinese make some very high tech/high quality stuff. Don't be too quick to dismiss them.

I think we will see a steady clamp down on our freedoms until we are convinced we are well on the downside of the curve. I am finding it hard to argue the steps we are taking to date. My hope is enough of us will take personal responsibility to curb the virus as fast as possible.

I had three cousins coming in to visit my father eariler this month. One from Florida, one from Jersey and one from New York. They all called and apologized but they thought it was wasn't a good idea of 3 people taking 5 different flights to get here to visit my 88 year old father. I was dissapointed as my father was looking forward to seeing them, but in hindsight, a good call.

Out to eat in on the outskirts of downtown Winston Salem last night. Went mexican, but the other two "nice" restaurants" were empty as well as the place we walked by.

Wife half jokingly said we had to stop at the liquor store on the way home and pick a couple of bottles because our two teens have the next two weeks off from school since the governor shut down the schools. Wife works from home, I'm thinking lucky for me I have to be in Charlotte all next week

Stopped at a grocery store on the way home to look at video selections at a redbox, and I couldn't help but want to see the toilet paper area. Can someone please explain to me why people are hoarding toilet paper? THIS is about the only thing I can think of...

Boston news just said that state run liquor stores near Philadelphia will close starting Tuesday, that will hit home for some ! In a week or so I should load up the truck and trailer and head down, should be able to make up the stock market losses !

Same we don't hoard but if being self reliant is hoarding then so be it. We have close to 6 months worth of supplies. Maybe a touch less. Only thing we lack is vegetables so that is my goal this test with our garden.

So right now, as people start to wake up to the possibility of lacking vegetables I am anticipating a run on seeds (unless it's happened already) and garden supplies.
