Methanol is toxic by two mechanisms. First, methanol (whether it enters the body by ingestion, inhalation, or absorption through the skin) can be fatal due to its CNS depressant properties in the same manner as ethanol poisoning. Second, in a process of toxication, it is metabolized to formic acid (which is present as the formate ion) via formaldehyde in a process initiated by the enzyme alcohol dehydrogenase in the liver.[6] Methanol is converted to formaldehyde via alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) and formaldehyde is converted to formic acid (formate) via aldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH). The conversion to formate via ALDH proceeds completely, with no detectable formaldehyde remaining.[10] Formate is toxic because it inhibits mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase, causing hypoxia at the cellular level, and metabolic acidosis, among a variety of other metabolic disturbances.

UH... you don't want to do that.. WW fluid has Methanol commonly known as Methyl Alcohol. It is poisonous to humans. And it is not just poisonous by ingestion. It sinks right into your skin. You don't want much skin contact if you can prevent it.

Ethanol (the kind of alcohol we drink) ingestion does not cause blindness. Might make you pass out or vomit on your face like your problem above. BUT Methanol will cause blindness and can cause cellular hypoxia. And the only difference in the methanol and ethanol atoms is Methanol has 1 carbon atom and ethanol has 2. Of course there are two more Hydrogen atoms stuck on that 2nd carbon atom in ethanol. The O-H radical stuck on the end is the same. A very minor chemical difference, yet so different in the way it reacts in our bodies. It seems like from 10 to 15 milliliters can be fatal. That is a pretty small amount.

If case numbers are underrepresented, then some ratios will be skewed. Say a fatality ratio is reported as 4% but < 1/2 of cases aren't reported by the gov't of ___. True ratio is ~2%.

Just an example, but perception will usually beat the bejeebers out of reality every time. ("In before the lock" )

Above is an example of a low temprature Windshield Washer Fluid down to -27 degrees. Of course the mix of Methanol varies. The +32 varieties have no methanol in them. The Zero degrees stuff has some. The -25 or -27 has a LOT of methanol in it. Probably about 40%. Some list freezing points down to -40 or -50. These are over 50% mixes. In any case, not good to bath in this stuff. Vodka or Everclear OK, WW fluid... not so much.

Well all of them went and got on a plane with likely 100+ others. As well as whoever was so contagious that they gave it to him.

This illustrates why the curve is tending up, compounding, at present.

Never drank stereo. When I was little, my mom told me about some relatives of ours that did. She mentioned blindness and death from drinking alcohol. Fast forward 10 years and I woke up drunk on the floor in our bathroom after a long night of partying and couldn't see a thing. Finally realized my eyes were closed and I didn't have enough strength to open my eyes. Felt like they were sewn shut. Finally got one of them open and all I could see was dark patches flittering around everywhere. Mom's words came back to haunt me... I'd drunk myself blind! Oh man, I started having regrets! Had trouble getting up off the floor. I couldn't pick my head up. Felt around for the sink, pulled my way up, and splashed water on my face and eyes. Crying away that I'd ruined my life.

Finally figured out I'd thrown up in my sleep, the vomit had sealed my eyes shut and glued my hair to the floor when it dried every time the furnace came on and blew across me laying on the floor. The spots flying around in my vision was light coming through the leaves outside the window.

I'm lucky I didn't aspirate on my own vomit and die. That's when I realized I had a drinking problem and started working to resolve it. Took a while, but worked out for me. Been 35ish years since then. I enjoy a beer with dinner now. Maybe two on a wild night. :drink:

Holy cow Moss! I am very glad you survived that night! I have never come even close to that!

In high school I recall getting drunk on hard liquor (my first time with that) and going into a bedroom to sleep it off. A girl who had a crush on me came into the room a started kissing on me as best I can recall. After that I do not recall what happened. She was a looker and I remember thinking - - - Dang it, of all times I had to drink too much.

Yup ... remains to be seen whether some of the steps the government is taking makes the problem better ... or actually compounds it, making it much, much worse ...
