^^ That's the hype they want you to buy into.

The numbers speak for themselves. Better yet, come to where I live and see if you can get a test for it.

I think my statement pretty much outlines what is going on. No hype.

Well, Mississippi was in that boat.

But then someone went and got tested, Mississippi reports COVID-19 patient recently traveled to Florida

Well the dow futures are down over 1,000 again.
Mississippi announced we have 0 confirmed cases and have tested over 35 people.
No test, no problem.

Darn, apparently some test kits leaked out.
Perhaps the ostrich mentality will change.
Dow futures over -1200.

After seeing how bad this is getting in Europe, and knowing we are at the same level of infection today that Italy was just 2 weeks ago, there will be much more strict orders coming from our state and community levels across the US. I'm betting we'll have many more orders within a couple days so we don't have to ration ventilators in 2 weeks.

Many more orders now in effect just 12 hours after I posted this. Hopefully these lockdowns and cancellations (and the many more to follow) can keep us within our hospitals' capabilities. Slow the roll, and let the process play out over the next year (rather than a 1 month burst) which will help us all in many ways.

Yes. Don't over run the hospitals. I posted about flattening the curve. That's what it is all about now.

Exactly. We all need to realize that while yes, this is a virus like the flu, it spreads much more rapidly. If the flu spread this fast, it too would overtake our hospitals. Once hospital staff is over run, it affects everyone... all health care is impacted. Heart attacks, strokes, car accident victims, pneumonia, etc. We'll get through this, but it will mean changes to most of our lives for the next several months at the least.

This situation greatly reminds me of my experience here (northeast Mississippi) in July 1990.
Gas prices were about $1/gallon, the world was fairly calm.
Then ****** Hussein invaded Kuwait.
The locals had a "so what, it doesn't affect me" attitude. I thought immediately the SHTF.
Well, I've been down here in Mississippi for 2.5 months now and up till today that was the same attitude.
It's changed, now the news reporters are acting like it may happen here. People are starting to stock up. Headlines like
Mississippi State, Ole Miss, SEC teams to play without fans this month because of coronavirus
are hitting the air.
Canned good shelves at Walmart seem to show stocking up is occurring.
People are starting to treat this as real, it can happen here.

I would expect the NCAA announces today they will cancel all tournament games completely, following the NBA's lead.

Is Clorox corp still based in Oakland? Manufactured there?

Headquarters in Oakland and one of those companies lacking glamour but always a solid preformer.

When I bought my 1922 home from the original homeowner I found a 1922 welcome book with a coupon for a free bottle of Clorox... debated on if I should redeem as no expiration.

Whitless prevails.. What a dork. I'll be farming as usual. My life won't change one iota. Sometimes I think she needs an instruction book to inhale and exhale........

I don't quite understand your need to attack Gretchen here (we get it, you didnt vote for her). All she did was declare the state of emergency so that resources can be available as needed. But the cancellation of universities, sports events, concerts, etc, is all at their individual discretion. It's inevitable at this point...., it will be everywhere, all large gatherings will be cancelled, etc.

Guess it's time to accept some temporary delay in our normal lives. I'm less concerned for my families health than I am for the impact all these cancellations will have.

It's new. It's not like the flu. It spreads more rapidly. It overwhelms and has out run ways to contain and test for it.

The inability of some to accept facts doesn't change those facts.

The major implication of this is economic, IMHO. Whether or not the flu lives up to it's potential, or not, the shutting down of given sections of the economy is going to have serious repercussions. I can't remember a time in my 70 years that travel from Europe has been shut off, or NBA cancelling a season, or the entire country of Italy on lock down, or any number of other things that have gone on in the last week or so. The financial fallout from this will be felt for a long time to come.

For those that don't understand the hype, look at the link on the left of this website...

Novel Coronavirus Infection Map

It is showing that the number of active cases was actually going down due to China getting this under control. The uptick is from the rest of the world. Italy failed to implement containment soon enough and they are now getting hit REALLY hard. Others have mentioned that they are trying to "flatten the curve." Yes, lives will be saved if they keep the rate of spread down so that the heathcare industry doesn't get overwhelmed. There are so many ventilators available.

Why the fear? Well there are unknowns and that scares people. We know that this virus is unique. It's R0 (R naught) is higher than the flu, so it could spread faster. People are contagious without know they are even sick. MOST people that are sick may only have symptoms of a cold or mild flu. That could lead to them infecting many others. I think we all have worked and carried on our lives with a cold before. Then there is the real impact. A high percentage of deaths for the elderly and those with high blood pressure, heart and lung issues, and diabetes.

What am I hoping for? The big unknown of will this virus be somewhat seasonal...

I think the next orders that affect many of us will be to restrict any gathering of a set number of people. Maybe that number is 30 or 50, or something that will eliminate most events.
