Cutting the cord

I bought my first new TV in 2005... just before digital was mandated. I'm rather rural, so there are no stations over the airways. Sometimes I think about getting satellite for the winter months but then I go to somebody's house or stay in a motel and wonder why anybody would pay to watch it. Even if you do find something worth watching you watch more commercials than show. I've been watching old westerns on YouTube, but who knows what changes they will implement now that Google (?) has bought the site.

We finally got a high speed internet connection!Had Direct TV since about 1993 or so.Still have and use our antenna for the local stations and went to FireStick and Sling(had all the channels we both watch);had Prime anyway so get all they offer too.I also took the telephone option;total savings about $120/month.

If you're looking to save money with streaming services, look around. There are a few free, but they have very few good shows. There is a 24/7/365 channel showing cats. If you don't watch sports, then Philo is a great option. The kids wanted Disney, so when it was $60 for the year, we got that as a Christmas gift. That's what has been on since Christmas.

So just finished a free trial of you tube tv. Seems pretty good. Gets most of the channels we want. Local networks on the things as well.

Now trying to get Fubu to work. I have it working but for some reason it thinks I am in detroit. Need to call tomorrow during business hours when someone can help me with that.

Last year bought a ROKU stick and begin the set up. All went well until they asked for a CC. Of course it will only be charged IF we select a premium option or a movie yadi...yadi....and could not proceed w/o a CC. So took it back to wally-wurl....
SO how you folks get into ROKU???
You guys just give them your CC info?

I couldn't remember giving them a CC so I just logged in to see. Looks like I used my PayPal. There is a setting to make sure you have to enter a pin number for any purchases. I just use it to access stuff I already paid for. All their so called free stuff is so bogged down with ads it is unwatchable.

Or simply have over the air so no cord or cable to cut

I was surprised at the reduction in the monthly electric bill by turning the TV and associated equipment (satellite receiver, sound system, separate recorder, HTPC, UPS, etc.) OFF. That was something like $10-15/mo alone. Coupled with the subscriptions, I cut about $100/mo out. Took the outside antennas down, disassembled and stashed them in the garage rafters. Rolled up all the wires and cables.

TV is still in place as a reminder of the waste it all was. Just a big black hole of nothingness.

I've got a few dozen DVD sets of TV shows I bought thinking I'd watch those instead of live. Nope. Still shrink wrapped. Hundreds of hours of stuff I recorded off both satellite and OTA .... haven't watched a minute of any of it.

Just completely lost all interest in TV in any form.

Even in the 60's it was called the idiot box...

I realize it is unrealistic for most to unplug... but my time off the media grid in Olympia is good for my soul.

My dad called it (when we got one early 50's) the "one eyed monster"
