Wife and kids got me a weather station for Christmas! I’ve been wanting one since we got the shop built, and I am super pumped about it! Weather is supposed to be nice tomorrow, so hopefully I can get it up and going tomorrow afternoon.

That is the one I have... installed it about 15 months ago and love it. I especially like the rain gauge feature. Be sure to sync to the Ambient app for your phone for access wherever you are!

How does the rain gauge work in freezing weather?

How does the rain gauge work in freezing weather?

I can not answer that at this time. Maybe someone with one can chime in. I know there are tons of them on the market with rain gauges, and of all the reviews I’ve read I’ve never seen one that spoke of the gauges below freezing.

It doesn't exactly work but the below freezing temps don't hurt it. I have done zero maintenance in 15 months and we had a rare 18in of snow last winter. I suppose it measured some precipitation during the snowfall and the melt but I didn't pay attention. Used a yardstick instead! Typically around here, when it is below freezing it is dry.

Congrats! You will get some extra precipitation reading as things melt at best. Mounting to a pole off the building?

Lucky you! I would like one, but have too many trees around for it to be accurate.

I tabbed a metal pole from salvaged materials and mounted on one end of our roof that is farthest from any trees so it is the highest point in the middle of our property. We live on a steep hill next to salt water so there is some micro climate effects such as wind, rain, temp that can vary significantly. I found this out by looking at other weather stations nearby that have posted online.

Not sure if this link will work but here is my weather station on wunderground:

You might also be able to look it up as my station ID is:KWASEABE23

You will definitely have fun with it. I am shocked that we have had 9.94in of rain in December!

I mounted it to a fence post about 20ft away from the shop. I figured the rain and wind readings would be more accurate that way.

We have that one too. We did have to get the screen replaced and the tech support was easy to work with.
