Good Morning. It's 47° this morning and high is expected to get to 72°. Our rain predictions have been moved back to next week.

Sorry about those with some hearing loss. I had mine checked a couple of years ago ... slight loss in left ear but, right side is still "20/20". You would think that, with all the advances in electronics and miniaturization, good hearing aids would cost less. Seems to be lots a scams out there though.

More fall leaf chopping today, on the ZT, and staying out of the way of the crew prepping, priming, and painting our front pipe fence. They're doing a great job! Best part is ... I'm not doing it.

Good morning! 19 now and clear. Supposed to get to 38 or so today.

Wood burner is cranking out some nice heat! Feels good.

I finally have the internet service working again. No more phone hotspot. For now. The tech spent 4 hours correcting installation issues from the original install and correcting software issues at the router box the controls the DSL that supplies my house. He found multiple software issues. And really had nothing to say about the incompetence of dealing with tech support that took 8 days to get him dispatched. I have to say....not sure it has ever worked this fast. Maybe it will be somewhat reliable at last.

No luck deer hunting. Saw some, nothing I wanted to shoot. Maybe I am over it......

Good morning All. Frosty 31 this morning with bright sunshine right now. Headed to the mid 40s today with abundant solar energy available to our array. Going to pick up some oak firewood advertised on Facebook marketplace this morning. Hopefully it will be worth the trip! Have a great Saturday.

The little Honda Trail 90, and the '63 BMW motorcycle, don't have oil filters as such. They both use a centrifugal system, in the BMW they're called slingers, that are supposed to separate the metal particles out by spinning the oil. Only problem is, the engines have to be disassembled in order to clean the slingers. The Honda makes it easy, but on the BMW, it means removing the crank shaft. Hopefully I won't live long enough to have to do that on the BMW.:laughing:

The old Nortons I used to ride used a metal can filter, but it had an odd thread and was expensive at the dealer. A buddy of mine had a lathe, and I talked him into modifying the spigot on the oil filter housing so it would accept a common Fram filter of about the same size. Worked like a charm. Those Nortons, and the Triumphs and BSAs of the time, ALWAYS leaked oil, often from more than one place. The main reason was the crummy gasket sealers available at the time. I remember one called Gasket Cinch, which was more of a rubber cement than a sealer. The heat and oil would melt that stuff like butter, and after a complete engine strip and rebuild, it would go right back to leaking in only a few thousand miles. Then along came the modern silicon based sealers, and the oil leaks were a thing of the past. The airhead BMWs went through the same thing with another sealer called Hylomar. It was preferred because it never hardened, supposedly a good thing because BMW drilled small oil passages through the cylinder bases that could be clogged if too much sealant was used. I've pulled two inch worms of silicon sealer out of those passages before, put there by ham fisted owners that didn't know what they were doing.

My second BMW bike used about a quart of oil every 1000 miles, and the dealer said that was normal. It was one of the first models to use Nikasil lined cylinders, and if you didn't load the engine heavily enough during break in, the rings wouldn't seat. Once I found that out, I put straight weight mineral oil in it and rode it like I stole it for a few thousand miles, and it quit using oil.

I never knew anybody that used the toilet paper filters, and I think you make a very good point about them, Drew. The old JC Whitney catalog was full of junk like that, and I remember tossing out several of the things I bought from them. I also remember getting a catalog almost every month, too, and putting them into the garbage without even opening them. Kinda like I do with the Harbor Freight catalogs now, and for the same reason. But these days you can go up to the Harbor Freight website and count the number of bad reviews on something before you waste your money, then dig one of their 20% off coupons out of the garbage can before you rush off to buy it.:laughing:

The secretaries at work used to have to fill up the oil reservoirs on the big paper shredders they used, Ron. I knew that shredders need lubrication, but have to confess I've never lubed mine. I've seen lubricated paper sold that was supposed to make that task neater, but I'd probably just spray something like LPS in there, assuming I ever get a round tuit.:laughing:

Plans: Dump run, pick up my BP med prescription and some money for a gun that was sold on consignment. I also need to get a replacement extension cord so I can plug in the tractor's block heater. Once that's plugged in for a hour or so, I'll clear the drive and walks.

78 years ago, today, Pearl Harbor was attacked...initiating the US entry in to WW II. Don't forget those brave men and women who died that day...

While we are talking about oil and lube. How many oil their paper shredder. I have never done this. But will start.

Been doing that for many years. I have a Fellowes shredder from Walmart and also use Fellowes shredder oil from Walmart. And I do it as that video showed by putting the oil on a piece of paper then run that paper through the shredder. I always do a second sheet of paper with the oily side turned the other direction.

As someone lucky enough to have looked down in the water in Oahu and watched the bubbles still coming up, after all this time...
Half the visitors that day were Japanese in blue suits festooned with cameras. They were very respectful.

Good morning to all! Low of 30, going up to near 50 today. Tomorrow, we are supposed to get the storm that RNG is getting now, hopefully it will be just rain.

Yesterday, just as I started to explain to my son how we were going to start with the electric install, the metal roof suppler called him. Roofing materials were ready to be picked up. Changed gears, hooked up the trailer, and off we went. Nice place, their guys loaded every last piece, taking their time and being very careful not to damage/ding anything. A nice change from the typical “ it’s not my stuff “ attitude.

We started planning our steps on getting the roof started in order to be really dried in, but by the time we got back, the loose soil around the garage again turned to muck! Fall back....regroup...plan B.... back to the electric install. We got the boxes installed and I marked where to drill the studs. I gave my son my bigarzz 1/2 drill and 1 spade bit...... I said “ have fun “ . I just sat back and waited for the first time it decided to grab and the throw him halfway across the garage....only took until the 2nd or 3rd hole. I had tried warning him, but you know how the next generation knows everything and does not take to well to advice.... well he learned a valuable lesson.... I laughed.... Today we will pull wire..well, he will. I will do the easy part and strip/prepare the wires in the boxes.

Got to run to the grocery store for the wifey. I want to do that early before the crowd and get back quickly so I do not eat into the project time.

I am a firm believer in changing the oil frequently. Even though I use synthetic in everything, and the vehicle manufacturers say 7500 miles, I still change it at 3500-4000. If anything, for my piece of mind. The tractor engine oil gets done every 100 hours.

Jay, I keep forgetting to wish you a safe and fun trip...watch out for those pesky monkeys!

good morning all. 41 going to 52 in sunshine today and tomorrow.
Oh my what a miserable past 18 hours.
Came in from log splitting, was awfully sore and very clogged up.
Took a shower, came out and started shivering.
And my upper arm, where I got the flu shot the day before, plus a pneumonia shot, was swollen and red around the shot area.
and I was cold, so cold I got in bed after lunch, turned the electric blanket to high, and felt pretty badly, clearly flu like, and I hardly ever get the flu, haven't in 20 years.
First time for everything, never had reaction to shot before.
I get the senior extra strength one, maybe this year there was something different in there.

and here I was joking with the nurse that I never get sick...sure jinxed myself.
I think flu shots are important, and glad I feel almost normal again this morning. Nurse tells me sometimes it takes a few days for the reaction to go away
so will try to take it easy today, though helper is coming at 9am for a little while, and then to take home his xmas gift.
I got him a portable jumpstarter/air compressor for the back of his car, same small size as I carry in the Audi, fine for his small car and mine, but not for
starting diesels, etc. I gave one like this to my oldest brother about three years ago, and he keeps thanking me, says it's one of the handiest things he's ever had.
If you don't have an air tank, hauling this little air compressor to the machinery, or one's own car, can save the day, so I'm a real believer in these things.

the info about the hearing aids was very helpful. Probably in my not too distant future.

Wow, I change my F 150 oil every 6000 miles, and I use synthetic!
