Family Tradition

My Family, especially my Mom and Sister have a tradition of miscommunication and convoluted communication channels within the family. They seem totally incapable of getting any piece of information right.

I seem to remember the old saying " Neither a borrower or lender be." Frankly, get a set of nads and say sorry it is not for others use.

I normally don't borrow anything if I can't afford to replace it; and don't lend anything if it's something I want back. The last thing I borrowed was a trailer, back in 2009. When family is involved though it gets sticky; especially since the splitter came from my father.

The easiest way would be to never live near family.

In June I dropped my woodsplitter off at my sister's place (120 miles away) so that my BIL could use it, with the understanding that I would need it in September. It had been my father's, so I felt that we should share it; besides, he's the kind of guy who is **** about things so I wasn't worried about getting it back. I'm now splitting my wood with an 8 lb sledgehammer. The woodsplitter is in the woods at his SIL's place so that I have no way of getting it. I could raise a stink but would hear about it for years; if I ever get the thing back, it's never leaving my property again.

I'm thinking you no longer have a splitter.

Annually my trailer becomes a High School Homecoming Float... My oldest niece's Freshman Class was trying to rent one for a week and didn't have the $450 rental fee... So it was pressed into service the last 5 years... did I mention I have more than one niece?

It has come back worse for wear but minor things like trailer lights and hook- up plug.

September is long gone. I would be demanding, in no uncertain terms, that it be returned and immediately. No excuses.

Being that it was your fathers, who technically owns it now? Was it left to you by the estate? If so, they should treat it as your equipment, not as if they own part of it.

I don't think it is ONLY your sister and your mother.
I think it is a quite common female thing.

You may be right. I think I have only met two women that I can remember that were clear and concise in their thinking and communication.

If you had ever met my wife, your total would still be 2 after you woke up (because you fell asleep). There is no such thing as 25 words or less with her.

For the most part I haven't had problems with loaning out my tractor. I used to have a brother that abused the privilege, but he's pushing up daises. The interesting part is that not to many neighbors are sad about it as I wasn't the only one he abused. Most that have used my tractor have treated it with respect.

I had an interesting way of dealing with my sons and tools. I told them they could use anything they wanted but they had to put it back after they were done. This was still when they lived at home. I only had to go looking for tools once. The rest of the times they put the tools back.

The kids are the reason I quit buying expensive hand tools. Found to many good tools rusting in the woods and vehicle engines dismembered. Said they were just helping dad work on the cars.

Trouble is some of our kids do not realize that expensive tools are not to be used as hammers. That is what cheap tools are for.

The first time that you say no, it's the hardest, but over time, it does get easier. Especially when you realize how little they care about you and your stuff.

I had a good friend to borrow my new jeep. He took it four wheeling, brought it back full of mud, and out of gas (it had a full tank)...then he had the gall to complain about the ride.

My wife and I both like to read..... So if I want a shorter version of the story I ask for the "Reader's Digest Condensed version". It's fun watching her struggle to say something with less words, but she can do it!

With my father, "back" might mean on the bench or floor next to whatever he had been working on the night before. If you used a wrench which was laying next to the truck, and returned it back on the wall where it belonged; it was just something he had to go find that night.
