talking about unsecured loads... i picked up a 6 foot section of nicely powdercoaded lightweight H cross section steel in my front yard. Glad it did not go thought someones windshield. I am sure ill find a good use for it.

I'm pretty sure I lost that. If I give you my address can you mail it to me, post paid?

It's the question I have asked many times. Do you need to secure something that secures your load in normal driving, or flipping end over end numerous times? Because, there is a difference.
On a similar note, I used to haul a little 400 Yamaha to work in NH or to Acadia National Park for fun, then unload and ride it. If I got into an accident and it was thrown from the truck into somebody's Corvette, which insurance would cover the damage; the truck or motorcycle?
Or more likely; if somebody's ATV or snowsled fell out of the back of the truck into oncoming traffic, which insurance would cover that?
I pay 75 $/yr for each of the above so that I am covered if I do something stupid. I've mentioned in the past that I'm paranoid. ;)

Around here, the person with the unsecured load would most likely be found “at fault”. Kansas is a no fault State, but insurance generally goes after the one who got arrested, got a ticket, or was indicated as having the most egregious “contribution” to the accident.

Not pictures but seen a 2018 chevy Denali lifted and everything fancy. Towing a trailer with a utv and a ATV sideways behind the utv. There was a chainsaw under the atv, gas can between the atv and utv, and another can next to the atv.

Only strap on the rig was a heavy 1in ratchet strap pulling the utv against the front of the trailer.

Well Duh! Always tie down the most valuable load on the trailer, if the other stuff bounces out, not a big deal.

This was on the Melroe Facebook page; not on the highway, hopefully they gave up before getting that far.

As bad as that is on the truck, if you are just going across your own ranch you really aren't going to hurt anything other than your own equipment. No pavement or even gravel in sight so we can always hope.

Generally speaking...... as far as I know anything attached to or in a vehicle and becomes separated is insured by the hauling, towing vehicle. Any other issues rely on the the item having its on insurance.

You want to throw the book at a guy like that. Yet the Big Box Store, probably gave him the string to tie it down.

A bar can be in legal trouble if you leave their place drunk, but someone can drive away from a store with a mattress tied to their roof with string.

Personal responsibility. Only one individual made the decision to drive on the road with a load secured like that. Nobody else caused the accident.

Trying to expand the responsibility to tangentially related people or entities is why we have so **** many rules and insurance charges. Focus on the one who was ultimately responsible.

Not so sure. People are generally stupid and have to be treated as such. The guy tying 2x4s to the roof of his car with string has maybe never done that before. The big box store sees people drive away like that all day long and even gives them the string. There has to be some responsibility in that. I have sold equipment and not allowed someone to leave without securing it properly, giving them or selling them straps.

And the big box stores have seen it done countless times with no problems.
Why would they think one mans way of tying is any more unsafe then the next guys?
Why would/should they think this guy doesn't know how to drive with this load & the next one does?
FAR more of these loads get home safely then don't.

True. And then you could argue that for any size load. And as I have said before, because a load comes loose, doesn't mean immediately someone looses their life. Mostly not.
