Hey Brandi, sorry but for some reason I am still not getting thread notifications. As for settling, maybe a quarter of an inch total...the cedar is extremely stable.

I know you bought a mill, have you started your house yet??

M7,
I just finished reading this. It has taken several days but it was a great read. I linked here from the Forestry Forum link you added to a thread there. I noticed I had posted on this was back in the beginning.

All I can say is wow! You have done some really neat stuff! A couple of questions:

How is the Waterlox doing on the floors? Is it holding up the the foot and ‘paw’ traffic? How many coats did you do, or do you remember.

Did your dripping on the deck go away with the OAK for the furnace? Why did you change out from the old soap stone?

Thanks for the detail and time you put in this thread!

The Waterlox is great and mid last year I steam mopped the floor and re-coated with the glossy-er Waterlox and it looks much better than the old dull finish. So far it is holding up well, but if you drag something across the floor it will mark it. Fortunately, a rag and a little bit of Waterlox will fix those spots quick and easy.

As for the soapstone, it just could not get the house much over 68 degrees, and I was burning a cart of wood a day when it was below freezing outside. With the furnace I am burning almost half of that because of it being ducked and the hot air forced up from the basement. It was 8 degrees this am and 72 on the main floor. Yes, all the water dripping has stopped, the wood heat keeps the moisture at bay.

Eddie, did anyone in your family do the dna thing? We did and it's pretty interesting....it even tracks bloodlines on emigration routes and locations.

My wife and I got a couple kits as Xmas presents but we are not going to do them. After researching the fine print, they can do whatever they want with the results of your DNA. As a matter of fact, the cost of the kit is tiny compared to what they make selling your info to everybody and anybody that will pay for it. I can not see putting that out there all over the universe.
Just my 2 cents.

Rick, 1/4 inch is amazing. Good info to retain. Looks like I can get ERC two hours from me, in Alto. But Texas ERC is $48 for a 6x6 eight footer. I have found it for $27 each up in Arkansas. So I'll buy a minumum truckload what I need out of Ark. and if needing any more, I'll drive up to Alto and pick more up.

Still working on a place to permanently put the mill. So far I have only cut 3 pine logs. But I now have a huge White Oak waiting to get cut up. I sawed off about 2 foot of it to make some wedding cake cookies for a co worker. Maybe next weekend I can get that on the mill.
hugs, Brandi

$27 is a decent price. I bought 300 of them for my build and figure I milled out another 100 longer or specialty ones. Cedar certainly is now my favorite wood to build anything,.... especially a house.

Btw, if you are having them trucked in on a 18wheeler flatbed, the cost will be the same if you have a half load of a full one, so make sure you get enough:thumbsup:

Rick, no problem... haven't been worried about it at all. We may come your way
sometime this spring. If and when that happens, we'll give you a heads up!

Yeah, things been going good here. We survived the deep cold snap.
We're planning to build a small greenhouse on two sides of an existing building.
Everything will be facing south and west.

Rick,
Thanks. I will do that. Do you think those 8 footers are 75 pounds. Or do you think they are around 100 pounds?
hugs, Brandi

Interesting comparison for me as when I built my log cabin in early '60's I negotiated and paid $2.00 each for mine and that was pealed and delivered across the lake, The logger floated them together tied up up as a raft.
Gave him $100. late fall as down payment balance in spring COD.
He signed a 'contract' with his " X ". Being as how this is all crown land in the area it was all profit to him.

I lied....it's not completely "done"....but it's close enough. Yes, with the threat of golfball sized man killin hail and massive Tornado's here, I finished the door by installing TNMike's forged straps down at the shop. I then layed it on the forks for transport up to the house. No help(as usual), so I figured..."what the heck, git r done".
The install went well and I still need to trim out the door and make a threshold, put acorn nuts on the inside bolt ends, then paint them flat black. I scuffed up the door a bit sliding on the forks, but some Tung oil will take acre of that:
What are the acorn nuts for on your front door? Did you use all thread with the screws I saw in the photo.

Mine averaged 90 lbs.

The acorn nuts went on the end of the bolts used to go thru the door then the metal straps.....just nicer looking than regular nuts.

Mine were $20 ea, so for 50ish years I reckon that inflation was not too bad then ;)

90 pounds? That’s the logs you built with? Wow, mine average 2800 pounds each.

Somehow, I lost this thread on my feed. Good to see you back motorseven. Are you all healed up?

Yep, new total knee replacement on 9 May is doing fantastic. Since I hit my $10K deductible, I scheduled the other knee for 26 Nov...it will be 'free'.
Man, I gotta split some firewood before then........

Good to hear from you. I’ve been debating knee replacement for several years. Just too chicken to go for it.

My 90 year old mom says she regrets hers, but I wonder just how bad her real knee would have been 18 years later......
