My wife spends a lot of time cleaning these. She uses a knife and had wire brushes them.

How do you clean them?

Put them in the driveway, drive over them with the cars until the husk comes off. Let them lay until they dry and then pick them up and put them into a bucket until ready to crack.

Experiment with the idea. You could use a small car instead. Once they are dry I used to crack them with my fist against a hard surface. Just lay the walnut down and give it a good sharp crack with the bottom of your fist. I wouldn't recommend that method for high production numbers though.

Depending on type of walnut. English walnuts tend to be thinner shelled and easier to crack. Black walnuts can be about like trying to crack a rock.

ware gloves!! I have drilled a hole in a 1x4 the correct size, then I just push them through. The bit on each end wipes away easy.
I don't like have a driveway full of husks. nd you leave them to long and the squirrels get them

If you have turf tires on your tractor just make a shout as wide as the tires, jack tractor up 1 1/2" and shove the nuts to it. You can't feed it fast enough.

My grandfather taught me the hole in the board method. He drove the nuts through with a hammer. I suppose you could have several holes of different sizes.
