If you have turf tires on your tractor just make a shout as wide as the tires, jack tractor up 1 1/2" and shove the nuts to it. You can't feed it fast enough.

Hey, that is a good idea! The OP has not clarified what type of Walnut...English or Black or...?

If they're black walnuts or even hickory nuts, I've never figured a way to crack them and remove the kernel where I though they were worth fooling with.

They are English.
My wife tried the drive over method with her Jeep

Smashed like a pancake....

I used to throw a bushel of black walnuts into my cement mixer with some broken up cinder block pieces, turn it on, and walk away for 20 minutes. Did a pretty good job of getting them started. Dump it out, hose off the nuts and dry on some screens or the garage floor. But I found I don like black walnuts as much as english walnuts and gave it up. Also a lot of work to crack black walnuts vs english.

I don't think I've ever seen an English Walnut in the husk. Since you're asking how to remove the husk I suppose not ASSume they never peel away from the nut on their own like pecans do. It would be wonderful to learn that you're picking them too early and your problem would be solved by leaving them on the tree a while longer.

I mostly deal with Butternuts...AKA White Walnuts...there is a natural worm/caterpillar that eats the hull and just leaves a thin crust that a stiff brush will take off leaving just the nut in an ultra hard shell...FWIW...Butternuts can be kept longer than most other mast crops...I've heard up to 10 years in the shell...

Can't help with the husks. But once you're down to the nut itself, a 20-ton hydraulic press from HF will pop it open in no time. ;)

I pick up freshly fallen black walnuts of the ground. For me, I think the nut has a slightly bitter taste if the hull turns black before it is husked.

A 5 gallon bucket is more than enough to last the winter for me.

I dump them in the concrete mixer with 6 softball size rocks and let it spin until the husks are off.

Dump them into a wheelbarrow to dry in the garden shed.

Crack the shells as I eat them in my 8" Wilton bench vice.

Have a little victory dance if I get a piece of nut as big as my thumbnail.

I very seldom get to dance. :dance1:

The above is a good description of why I seldom fool with them.
BTW. I'd certainly like to have an 8" Wilton bench vice.
