Homeowner's insurance can be high because of the distance from the nearest fire station and how good the station is rated. If they have old outdated equipment, the ability for them to save your house is less, so you pay more in insurance.

If that was the case I would be paying triple what I pay because the local volunteer dept has vintage equipment and houses burn flat to the ground before trucks arrive from three miles away around here pretty often..

I'm having trouble getting even the most basic information out of them. I've also been reading how others are having great difficulty with claims. I'm wondering if they (like so many others) have changed their practices in the last few years to be less consumer oriented.

I do believe that you are correct!
My friends and I now refer to it as UAA........United Automobile Assn.
The "Services" as we knew them 50+ years ago, are now mostly gone.

I have an electrician come in about every couple years to look things over along with my licenced hearth guy every year to limit any fire issue. I also take out every red squirrel that decides to try and make my soffits his home..

My family home is in a "hurricane zone".
That is what REALLY drives the cost.
My 289 year old house would be $4500+ (State regulated- Mass. Fair Plan)
I have Lloyds of London 350K coverage for $2200.

I could see the Fire department showing up and standing around having a safety meeting while your place burns. Hey, it's insured! Well mine isn't!

You used to be able to get a blanket farm insurance that supposedly covered everything. Twenty years ago or more, I had brokers come in for a quote. They individually itemized every building and larger piece of equipment. No way, I was going to pay what they had totalled up. Now, with two more building and a lot more equipment, it would just be out of the question.

I always thought you could underinsure, and get up to that amount for a loss, but then in reality you only get that percentage of what you covered. You insured a million dollar place for a hundred grand, and lost it, they would pay you ten grand!

I did contribute to fund raising for them, but it kind of bothered me to see them driving 60k plus vehicles while not paying for health insurance.

Happpened near us, house burnt down and took two new cars with it, no insurance and a public appeal, I did not contrribute, if you want the glitter pay the isurance, turned out nothing was paid for and credit cards all maxed out too.
Why am I expected to help pay for them to flaunt what they didn't have.

Yep... I hear you. Just payed 2nd 6 month payment for workman's comp... 15k. Liability was another 11k, I believe. That's x 2 for the year... And our clients cry about what it costs today...

....not sure how I forgot about health insurance premiums...my wife and myself...1600.00 a month. So add another 19,200.00 a year to our insurance bill

Our healthcare system is so broken. The best analogy to our current healthcare system is a supermarket that doesn't have any prices on the items. Some items may be marked up 10,000%. You don't know any of the prices until 30+ days after you went through the checkout line.

I don't know if youhave the same but here if you served in a theatre of war you get a gold card which is the best medical services free for life.
Had a few sessions with a good cardiologist which would have cost me a few thousand.

Homeowners insurance? Ha Ha Ha they want $5200 for my house for just a year. Insurance is one of the biggest rackets in America.

Like Broken Track said, stay out of debt, and owe no man anything, you will sleep better too.

Absolutely...but I have never seen anything like it. 85% of Americans are BROKE. the vast majority not even having $1000 in the bank, and live paycheck to paycheck...and yet 99% of them defend the way they spend money to the death. I mean to the death. It makes NO SENSE.

I mean if you had a tractor, and it was slip-sliding towards a pond, at some point you would just stop, get off, and reassess the situation. Then, if someone who had been in the same situation as you, explained how they got out, the guy with the precarious tractor would listen so they would not lose their tractor. With money, people do not do that, and wonder why they get in over their heads.

The thing is, every day that people make a payment on a loan, they are getting out of debt. Eventually they will be debt free, but only if they do not get more loans when they pay off the ones they got now!

In the end it comes down to contentment; how content are you? I am content, and do not live my life in fear like insurance companies want you too. "Being a racket" is a huge understatement!

Funny how the littlest things can make an impact on me. Saw a lady at the checkout yesterday with the smallest Hellmans Mayonese jar I have ever seen. I buy the large ones, and only on sale.

On the other hand, I do wake up in panic sometimes and look out to make sure nothing has caught fire.

Right. I see a lot of people lumping physical loss coverage in with liability coverage when discussing their insurance cost.

They are two very different things. You have to understand the parts first before you start comparing insurance coverage costs.

You should probably review the co-insurance clause in your policy with your insurance agent. Most standard policies require 80% coverage to value or you will be penalized on a claim.

haven't talked to my agent about it. But I have read my policy and at times they send me policy changes which I always read.
Never read anything about that in my policy
